FEATURED

A former Portland resident is featured in an article in the current edition of Newsweek magazine.

Mary Meeker, New York, N.Y., daughter of the late J. Gordon and Catherine Meeker, was interviewed about her life as a stock picker for Morgan Stanley.

She came under intense scrutiny in 2000 when the stock market fell. Meeker was investigated by the New York Attorney General on suspicion of “hyping stocks of companies she had as banking clients.” She was cleared of those charges.

Meeker told the magazine for the Aug. 30 issue that she is trying to rebuild her reputation and energize technology stocks. “I’m not hiding anymore,” she said.

The plant will convert coal into the gas, which will have fewer air pollutants such as soot particles and mercury.

Company executives said they would like to build the 1,000-megawatt synthetic gas-fired plant in the next five to six years. It is expected to cost $1.6 billion to build.

PROFIT CUT

Tyson Foods Inc. is forecasting lower company profits this year, due to grain-hedging losses, weaker demand and higher cost of raw materials.

The company, based in Springdale, Ark., said it expects earnings of $1.08 to $1.15 per share for the year ending Oct. 2. In late July, Tyson predicted fiscal-year earnings of $1.20 to $1.30, Tuesday’s edition of the Wall Street Journal said.
