Taking Note

The book chosen for Jay County Reads! 2008 is "Icy Sparks" by Gwyn Hyman Rubio.

"Icy Sparks" is a young girl growing up in Eastern Kentucky in the 1950's with Tourette's Syndrome.

The book was also chosen for Oprah's Book Club in 2001 and was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year.

Discussion groups for those reading the book will be Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 2:30 p.m.; Thursday, Sept. 25, at 10:30 a.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 6:30 p.m.

Author Gwyn Hyman Rubio will visit JCPL on Thursday, Oct. 9, to discuss her book and answer questions. A book signing and coffee tasting will precede the event.

Library news

Two classes will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at Jay County Public Library, 315 N. Ship St. in Portland.

A Basic Genealogy Class will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. and Ancestry Library Edition will be from 11 a.m. until noon.

The genealogy class is an introduction to using the library's materials to start family research and the ancestry class shows how to use the online genealogy resource available in the library.

A new group is beginning at the library and will meet the second Monday of each month.

A Cookbook Club will discuss and sample recipes from selected cookbooks.

The book reading group will discuss "Me: Stories of My Life" by Katharine Hepburn on Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.

The group meets the third Monday of each month.

A Beginning Internet one-on-one class with a staff instructor is available at the library.

Story times are Monday, Sept. 8, 15 and 22 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 9, 16 and 23 at 1 p.m.

Story times are for pre-school age children.

Family Fun Time is Sept. 4 and 18 at 9:30 a.m. for children and parents or caregivers. There will be books, music and toys shared by the children while conversation is shared by adults.

An after school special is Friday, Sept. 5, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. at the library for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Registration at the library at (260) 726-7890.

Gourd crafting

A meeting for anyone interested in gourds and gourd crafting will be held Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at 6443 S. U.S. 27 in Bluff Point. Becky Whitted will show how to make a gourd scarecrow.

The meeting is for adults and the cost is $1. Participants may bring gourds and crafting supplies.
