Taking Note
Author Gwyn Hyman Rubio will be the featured guest at Jay County Public Library Thursday evening.
Rubio is the author of "Icy Sparks" which has been the focus of this year's Jay County Reads event.
There will be a coffee tasting and book signing beginning at 6 p.m., and Rubio will speak at 7 p.m.
Copies of "Icy Sparks" and "The Woodsman's Daughter" will be available for sale at the free event.
Born in Macon, Ga., she graduated from Florida State then joined the Peace Corps, serving in Costa Rica.
Her collection of short stories, "Sharing Power," was nominated for a Pushcart Press Editors' Book Award."Icy Sparks" was her first novel.
She now lives in Versailles, Ky.
Coffees will be provided by the Glass Bonsai, with refreshments by the Redkey Extension Homemakers. For more information, contact the library at (260) 726-7890.
Donors honored
American Red Cross Blood Services has honored Carl Stoner, Portland, with the Outstanding Blood Donor Award for Jay County. Stoner has donated 139 units of blood in his lifetime and gave blood seven times in the past year.
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross was also honored for increasing collections by 14.6 percent. The chapter serves Jay, Blackford, and Delaware counties.
Asbury United Methodist Church was honored with the Growing by Leaps and Bounds Award, which recognizes blood drive sponsors that have increased the units of blood donated at their blood drives by at least 30 percent or who have increased the number of blood drives they host.
The Jay School Corporation received the First Time Sponsor Award for hosts who become involved after a three-year absence.

Katie Snyder, Portland, has entered a head of beef in the junior shorthorn division of the 35th annual North American International Livestock Exhibition in Louisville, Ky.
The event is set for Nov. 8-21.
Seeking quilts
The Towne Squares Quilt Club is seeking quilts for display at its 27th annual Harvest of Quilts Show on Oct. 10-12 at the Darke County Fairgrounds in Greenville, Ohio.
Quilts should be taken to the fairgrounds Thursday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Quilts can be picked up after the show from 5 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Jay County Public Library presents a program on modern day ghost hunting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13.
