Dave Griffey, an antique car enthusiast, has just published the book Beyond the Pioneer - The Impact of "America's First Mechanically Successful Automobile." The book covers the history of early Howard County automobile pioneers and contains extensive information about Portland native Elwood Haynes and why Mr. Haynes deserves credit for America's first car.
The public is invited to meet Griffey on Saturday at the Jay County Historical Museum in Portland from 1 to 3 p.m.
Books will be available for purchase and may be autographed by Griffey. The museum is located at 903 East Main St. in Portland and admission is free.
Leadership workshop
The Area 6 Fall Leadership Workshop of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Asbury Untied Methodist Church, 204 East Arch St., Portland The host is Bob Freemyer, president of the Jay County Retired Teachers Association.
Among the guest speakers will be Tony Sales, a CVS pharmacist.
Library events
Jay County Public Library will offer story times on Monday at 10 a.m. and Tuesday at 1 p.m. Four or five books will be read aloud and a craft will be made. Infants and children are invited and must be accompanied by an adult.
Story times will also be Monday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 1 p.m.

Jewelry making for families, teens and adults will be Saturday, Sept. 30, from 10 until 11 a.m.
Registration is required and there is a $3 material fee. To register, call the library at (260) 726-7890.
Home buyers seminar
A free credit score and home buying seminar will be held Thursday, Sept. 28, in Hartford City.
The seminar, presented by Rhonda Murphy and Dan Ridenour, will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Hartford City Public Library, 314 North High St.
Major steps in the home buying process will be discussed and a free credit report will be given.

Fairy adventure
Girl Scouts of Wapehani Council will present a Fairy Adventure on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. until noon for girl scouts ages five to eight.
The event will be full of fun activities and camps are available at Camp Munsee in Selma; Camp Tanglewood in Anderson; Girl Scout Cabin in Marion; and Memorial Park's McGrady Shelter in New Castle.
Girl Scouts should bring a friend. The cost for registered scouts is $5 and the cost for other girls is $15.
