Author to speak at JCPL

Taking Note

Michael Perry, the author of "Truck" will speak at Jay County Public Library on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m.

"Truck" finds the author trying to get his old pickup truck running while struggling to grow his own food, live in peace with his neighbors and sort out his love life.

There will also be a book signing with paperback books available for $4.

To speak

Archaeologist Brad Lepper will speak at the Fort Recovery State Museum on Sunday. He will present the program "The Great Hopewell Road: Ohio's Ancient Superhighway" at 2 p.m. The Great Hopewell Road was a set of parallel earthen walls built around the time of Christ.

Lepper is curator of the Ohio Historical Society and a professor and author.

Leave of absence

Pete Vogler, Arts Place MusicWorks faculty chair, will take a one month leave of absence this summer to volunteer with the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps from Toledo, Ohio. Vogler will transport administrative and instructional staff members and assist with other duties.

Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps will perform on Saturday, Aug. 8 in the DCI Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Library events

The book reading group at Jay County Public Library will discuss the book "The Year of Living Biblically" by A.J. Jacobs on Monday, July 20.

The group meets the third Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at JCPL.

The group will discuss "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See on Tuesday, Aug. 18. For more information, call the library at (260) 726-7890.

Free passes to Minnetrista in Muncie are available at JCPL. A library card may be used to borrow a pass for one week for a family to visit the exhibits and grounds at Minnetrista.

Minnetrista is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Story time will be held Thursday at 10 a.m.; Make a Puppet will be Friday at 2 p.m. for all ages; and the teen program "Build-a-Bot" will be July 14 at 6:30 p.m.

Earns degrees

These Portland residents recently received degrees from Indiana University Purdue University in Fort Wayne.

Terry Jacobs earned an associate's degree in manufacturing/construction engineering technology/interior design.

Eric James earned an associate's degree in nursing.

Erin St. Myers received a bachelor's degree in English and linguistics.

Dean's list

Terry Jacobs, Portland, made the dean's list at Indiana University Purdue University in Fort Wayne for the spring semester.

Joshua Kable, Portland, made the semester honors list at IPFW for the spring semester.

Tiffani Bickel, Tracy Cline, James Heare, Michael Jobe and Erin St. Myers, all of Portland, were named to both lists.

Joseph Vormohr made the dean's list for the winter term at Hanover College. Joseph is a junior at Hanover and the son of Frank and Marcie Vormohr, Portland.

Terrah L. Nunley, Ridgeville, was named to the dean's list at Vincennes University for the spring semester.

To attend

The grandson of a Portland resident will attend the Summer Session at the Air Force Academy.

Andrew Carpenter, the grandson of Nellie Morrical, will attend the summer session in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He is the son of John Carpenter, CDR, USN retired and Susan Carpenter, Garnet Valley, Pa.

Photo contest

An online stained glass windows contest is being sponsored by the Randolph County Historical Society.
