Aviation collection set at JCPL (9/14/04)
Taking Note
A collection honoring Jay County pioneer aviator Albert Rupel is on display at the Jay County Public Library in Portland through Saturday, Sept. 25.
The display commemorates the 100th anniversary of his first flights and is in the display case in the entrance foyer of the library.
The JCPL will celebrate “National Talk like a Pirate Day” on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m. with a special pirate program.
Elementary kids are invited to come and enjoy stories, crafts, refreshments and maybe some buried treasure! Registration is required.
On Saturday, Sept. 25, at 1:30 p.m. Marlene Skeoch, from Buttnz and Bowz, will demonstrate the fine art of balloon sculpting.
Participants will also get to try their hand at making balloon animals.
The program is free and for anyone over age 15. Registration is required.
Other upcoming hands-on programs will be “A Killing in the Catskills,” a murder mystery with charades, on Oct. 5; “Make ‘n Take” project with Jane Prescott on Nov. 2; “Make your own Christmas Cards” using rubber stamps on Dec. 7.

CLASSROOM GRANTS
Creative teachers in need of classroom funding have until Friday, Oct. 1, to submit an application for the Bright Ideas grant program.
Vectren Corporation and Peyton Manning’s PeyBack Foundation, in conjunction with the Indiana Department of Education, have created a program to award $100 to $500 grants to teachers for creative programs in their classrooms.

LILLY ENDOWMENT
The Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship Program is offered to principals and teachers with at least three years experience a chance for a grant to participate in a six week summer project.
The project must begin after June 1, 2005 and be completed by Aug. 31. Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 1. For more information, e-mail [email protected] or www.lillyendowment.org.
IRIS MEETING
Iris growers from Ohio, Indiana and Michigan will gather at Minnetrista Cultural Center in Muncie on Friday, Sept. 17, and Saturday, Sept. 18, for the 2004 Region Six Fall Iris Society meeting. The 2004 Senior Games will take place Wednesday, Sept. 22, through Saturday, Sept. 25, at the YWCA, 310 E. Charles St. in Muncie and at the Center for Vital Aging, in the Community Center for the Arts, 520 E. Main St., Muncie.
The cost to participate in the senior games is $12. For more information, call (765) 759-1121 or (800) 589-1121. LifeStream is sponsor of the Senior Games.
OKTOBERFEST
The 30th Annual Hoagland Oktoberfest will be held Friday, Sept. 17, through Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Hoagland Park and Pavilion, 12 miles south of Fort Wayne.
The Goodtime Dutchmen will perform on Friday evening and again on Saturday, along with Justus III. Also on Saturday, High Noon Country will perform from 9 p.m. to midnight.
On Sunday, Party Time will perform from noon to 4 p.m. and Spike and the Bulldogs from 5 to 8 p.m.
Admission is $7 and a three day pass is $16.
Camping is available.
