Award applications due in August

Applications for the Indiana Farm Bureau Young Farmer Excellence in Agriculture and Achievement awards are available at www.infarmbureau.org under “Programs” and then “Young Farmer Homepage.”
The agriculture award recognizes young farmers (age 18-35) who do not earn the majority of their income from an owned agricultural operation but who contribute and grow through their involvement in Farm Bureau and agriculture. The winner will receive a John Deere Gator, $3,000 and paid expenses to the national convention.  
The achievement award is for farmers who must earn a majority of their income from production agriculture and who set a positive example for others. The winner will receive $6,000 and 250 hours of use of an M-Series tractor and paid expenses to the national convention.
Application deadline is Aug. 1 by midnight. For more information, call 1-800-FARMBUR ext. 7846.

Library news
Tricia Fields, author of “The Territory,” will have a book signing on Wednesday, July 11, at 6 p.m. in the Friends Study Room at Jay County Public Library. Fields was the winner of the Tony Hillerman Prize in 2010 for Best First Mystery Set in the Southwest. “The Territory” is a novel about drug cartels in Texas and Mexico. Copies of the book will be available for sale.
The book discussion group will meet Monday, July 16, at 7 p.m.  They will discuss “The Territory” by Tricia Fields. “The Dry Grass of August” by Anna Jean Mayhew will be discussed at the Aug. 20 meeting.
Zumba with instructor Anna Racster will be held Wednesday, July 18, at 6 p.m. The class will last a half hour and everyone must sign a waiver to participate. If anyone is under age 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the waiver. Call the library at (260) 726-7890 to register by July 16.
