Back-to-school blast held (8/31/04)

Taking Note

A back to school blast will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Jay County Public Library in Portland. Teens in grades seven through 12 are welcome. An open mike will be available for those willing to perform. Prizes will be given away and refreshments will be served.

The main purpose for this meeting is to gather ideas for future programming and books to be selected for the library. No registration is necessary.

September is library card sign up month at the Jay County Public Library. Cards are free to those living in the library’s service area. Those under 18 must have photo identification, proof of residency and the signature of a parent or guardian.

A “school is cool” plastic book bag will be given to kids who use their card during the month of September. Teens who check out books can register to win in the “cool tool” give-away. Pre-schoolers who check out with their parents may enter the “I’m So Cool” give-away. There are also “cool” reading accessories available for adults.

ACT IN OCTOBER

College bound high school students can take the ACT Assessment on Saturday, Oct. 23. The exam includes four parts: English, reading, math and science. Students can get registration materials from their guidance counselors or register online at www.actstudent.org. The fee for taking the test is $28. Registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 17, and late registration deadline is Friday, Oct. 1.

CHILD CARE HELP

Licensed family child care providers may be eligible for a federal food program to help offset food costs. The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is designed to help ensure nutritious meals and snacks for children in child care. AUTISM WALK

The “Answers for Autism Walk” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, at the Lawrence Township Special Education Building, 5626 Lawton Loop East, Indianapolis. The walk is a one mile awareness and fund raising event with the proceeds begin used to support programs that serve the needs of individuals with autism across the state and promote the advancement of autism research.
