MARION — They’re back to familiar territory.

Before falling short last season Jay County had been to five straight sectional championship games. The Patriots didn’t allow their drought to last long, earning a berth in the 2005 Marion sectional finale with a 2-0 shutout of the South Adams Starfires Thursday night at Ballard Field.

Jay County will play the host Giants (10-6-1) in the sectional championship match Saturday at 5 p.m. Marion defeated Norwell in the first sectional semifinal game Thursday, 2-1.

“It feels good, it feels really good,” said Jay County coach Sue Rager, who has coached the team throughout its existence. “We’ve never had such a strong midfield and front line as we’ve had this year. They do a great job.

“We’ve got five girls who have more than five goals. There’s not just one girl that’s scoring, there’s a variety of girls that have the ability to score. They take that opportunity when they get it.”

Jay County didn’t need a lot of girls to score Thursday. One was enough as goalie Abby Loy and the defense stone-walled their third straight opponent to improve to 7-5-2.

The Patriots also beat Blackford 2-0 in their first sectional contest Tuesday and blanked Yorktown 1-0 in the regular-season finale.

South Adams (9-5), which defeated Jay County 3-0 during the regular season, was limited to seven shots on goal. The Starfires had just two shots in the first half and got most of their second-half shots as they made a desperate run in the closing minutes.

“Abby (Loy) did an excellent job in the goal,” said Rager. “She was anticipating, and with the defense tonight ... it was sweet.

“Basically tonight our plan of action was to stay on their best scorer (Priscilla Brito). We put Kaelee Keller on her and she shut her down.”

Brito scored the key goal in South Adams’ regular-season win over the Patriots, knocking the ball in the net at the first-half buzzer to give her team a 1-0 lead. However, Keller limited her to just one shot in the sectional rematch. Madison Moore finished with three shots.

Starfire coach Jose Brito said his team had problems on both sides of the field.

“Today our marking was off on the sides,” he said. “We weren’t marking very good. ... We didn’t cross the ball like we did in the last game.

“The girls are disappointed. We played very good through the year, but today the ground was a little wet and it seems like they couldn’t control the ball. When we made the passes they were just a little too long. We had some opportunities and unfortunately we couldn’t finish.”

While Loy and company were anchoring the defense, another Abby did the scoring.

Senior Abby Schmiesing notched both Jay County goals, each on plays started by Tequila Guntle.

The first came just over three minutes into the game when the Patriots got a corner kick. Guntle booted the ball in from the left corner and Schmiesing rushed in from the right side to pop the ball into the net at the 36:51 mark.

The score stayed at 1-0 for the remainder of the first half, but 10 minutes into the second Guntle and Schmiesing got together again. This time South Adams was trying to clear the ball, but Guntle gained control near midfield on the left side and sent a long kick toward the goal. Schmiesing got behind the defense, beat goalie Courtney Moore to the ball and scored to the right corner.

Rager said she saw a big difference in her team compared to its first meeting against South Adams

“We had a couple players that were unable to play that game,” she said. “The girls were really flat. That was not the real Jay County team. Tonight’s game, tonight’s team was Jay County’s team.”

Jay County finished with seven shots on goal, six of which came after the break. Schmiesing took three shots, Saffron Redwine had two and Amber Champ and Dana Horn each added one.

Saturday’s sectional title game will be a rematch of last season’s first round contest in which Marion stopped Jay County’s streak of reaching sectional championship games by topping the Patriots 2-1.

The teams have faced five common opponents this year. Jay County defeated Anderson Highland 4-1 and Muncie Southside 7-0, split with South Adams, tied Norwell 3-3 and lost to Muncie Central 4-1. Marion defeated Highland 13-0, Southside 7-0 and Norwell 2-1 and lost to Central 6-0 and South Adams 5-0.[[In-content Ad]]
