Balanced effort key for Starfires (01/09/2009)

BLUFFTON - Six different Starfire girls won events Thursday night as the South Adams High School swim team defeated the Bluffton Tigers 114-69. The girls team lost 97-88.

Erika Waugh and Jessica Sharp led the SAHS girls scoring wins in the 400-meter freestyle (5-minute, 3.09 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (1:06.91) respectively. They also teamed with Jalisa Balsiger and Jansen Yoder to take the 200 medley relay in 2:22.96, and joined Yoder and Allison Beitler for first in the 400 freestyle relay at 4:39.23.

Alyssa Sharp (200 freestyle - 2:33.88), Alexia Fox (1:19.99), Beitler (100 backstroke - 1:18.51) and Taylor Turner (diving - 172 points) all added individual wins.

Justin Klopp, Alex Habegger and Eric Feeney each won two events for the boys team, but Bluffton took the team victory thanks to 10 second-place efforts and seven thirds.

Versailles beats Tribe

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery Middle School seventh grade boys basketball team struggled in the third quarter and fell 40-33 Thursday to the Versailles Tigers. The eighth grade Indians also lost, 40-27.

Elijah Kahlig had 13 points for the Tribe seventh graders (3-2), who were tied with Versailles at halftime only to get outscored 16-8 in the third quarter. Ben Dilworth added eight points.

Chad Schroer did more than half of the scoring for the eighth grade team (2-3) as he finished with 16 points. Trent Kaiser followed with five.

Stars fall to AC

GENEVA - The visiting Adams Central Jets knocked off the South Adams Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team 25-22 Thursday.

Bryanna Graat had 11 points and six rebounds for the Starfires in the defeat. Tori Smith added six points.

Tigers top EJMS

YORKTOWN - East Jay Middle School's sixth grade boys basketball team lost 44-26 Thursday the Yorktown Tigers.

Justin Dirksen and Jared Schlosser each scored six points in the Chiefs' season opener. Jake Carpenter chipped in five points.

EJMS lost the B team game 28-12 with 17 with David Fernandez scoring six points.

Murrell wins AA

CONNERSVILLE - Alexis Murrell of Portland's Gym City Gymnastics won three events and took the all-around competition Sunday at the Celebrate the New Year event in Connersville.

Murrell took the Level 7 uneven bars with a 9.1, the floor exercise with a 9.05 and the vault with an 8.775. She added a 8.2 on the balance beam for an all-around total of 35.125.

Katie Snyder picked up the other victory for Gym City, taking the Level 8 vault with an 8.95. Second-place efforts came from Courtney Miles on the Level 6 floor (9.075), Riley Leavell on the Level 4 floor (9.025) and Halle Hill on the Level 4 vault (9.05).[[In-content Ad]]
