The Chiefs are ready to march and the Eagles are ready to fly on Friday.

Members of the East Jay and West Jay middle school eighth grade bands will march together at the homecoming parade playing a song which was composed specifically for the schools.

“Chiefs March as Eagles Fly” was completed in April by composer Les Taylor of Anderson.

Before writing the song, Taylor met with seventh and eighth grade students at both schools during the 2003-04 school year.

Taylor spoke about being a music composer and got input from the students on the song he was planning to produce.

“(Meeting with Taylor) was neat. I enjoyed it. It was fun to learn about what he does,” said EJMS band member Chance Milligan.

The title of the song was created by a Tyler Wolford, a freshman at Jay County High School and former East Jay student.

Students submitted approximately 20 suggestions and the winning title was chosen by middle school teachers, said EJMS band director Pete Vogler.

Each school performed the song at a spring concert in May.

“This will be the first time the groups have performed together and marched (in a parade),” Vogler said during band practice at EJMS on Monday. “This parade will be the biggest crowd (these kids will performed for) until they perform at the state fair in high school.”

Funds totaling $800 were raised by the band members to hire Taylor to write the one and a half minute song.

“He did some different things to (the song). He really worked hard,” Vogler said about Taylor, who has collaborated with the Jay School Corporation band departments since 1976. “It is just at our (skill) level.”

Taylor wrote the song to the time and measure specifications set by Vogler and Kelly Smeltzer, the band director at West Jay and an assistant band director at Jay County High School.

The rights to the song are retained by Taylor.

“We do this every three years so all of the (middle school) students have a chance to be involved,” Vogler said.

On Friday, about an hour before the 5 p.m. parade, the 48 EJMS and 24 WJMS students will line up together for a brief practice before they make the mile long march.

“(Marching) was hard at first but now it’s not,” said EJMS band member Shalynn Bailey.

The band will not march the entire parade route. They will join the parade at Arby’s and continue to EJMS, Vogler said.

“I can’t wait (to march in the parade),” Milligan said.[[In-content Ad]]
