BLUFFTON - The West Jay Middle School seventh grade girls basketball team kicked off its season with a big win Monday, defeating the Bluffton Tigers 42-14.
The eighth grade team fell, 37-19.
Cierra Barcus powered West Jay's seventh grade team with 12 points, and Betsy Huffman joined her in double figures with 10. Chelsea Tighe added six points.
Taylor Franklin had seven points for the Eagle eighth graders, who went scoreless in the second quarter. Shelby Shirk added six points.
Stars top Norwell
OSSIAN - South Adams Middle School's eighth grade girls basketball team opened with a victory Monday by topping the host Norwell Knights eighth grade B team 37-14.
Alyssa Armenta and Shanti Inniger shared the team high for the Starfires with eight points apiece. Kara DeLong had six points and seven rebounds, Kristen Muselman grabbed seven boards and Tori Smith totaled six assists.
Six from Judan win
MARION - With six individuals earning championships, Portland's Judan Judo finished third Saturday at the Red, White and Blue Classic.
Kelsi Bostic, Gabrielle Minnich, Andrew Toney, Michael Daniels, Caleb Culy and Isabelle Minnich all finished in first place in their respective divisions for Judan. Amanda Buell, Jamie Chan, Chiann Cupples, Logan Drumm, Alberto Guerrero, Adam Haffner, Benjamin Muhlenkamp, Brandon Ressler and Adam Wellman all added runner-up efforts, and Logan Drumm, Zack Mays and Abigail Muhlenkamp finished third.
Grimes runs in NY
NEW YORK - For the second straight year, Portland was represented in the New York City Marathon.
Brian Grimes, 37, Portland, was one of the nearly 40,000 runners who took part in the race. He averaged 8-minutes, 43 seconds per mile to finish the 26.2-mile race in 3:48:35.
He was 9,205th overall and 2,625 in his age group.
Last year, Portland residents John McShane, Tim Poole and Jeff Bailey competed in the race.[[In-content Ad]]
