Barnett silences UC (04/25/07)

Baseball roundup

UNION CITY - Josh Ludy went deep for the second straight night. And Derek Barnett didn't allow the opposition so much as a single.

Ludy led the offense for Jay County in support of a no-hitter from Barnett Tuesday as the Patriots slaughtered the Union City Indians 14-0 in five innings.

Making just his second career start, Barnett, a junior, baffled the Union City hitters. He allowed only a walk while striking out seven batters en route to the win.

Ludy, who also homered Monday against Adams Central, finished 4-for-4 as the Patriots (6-1) racked up 17 hits against the Indians. In addition to his solo home run, he had four RBIs and a stolen base.

Josh Selvey went 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs, and Michael Jobe, Rhett Retter and Trey Dunn added two hits apiece.

Aaron Bogenschutz, Casey Waters, Dalton McGill and Colton Lombardo each had a double in the win. Bogenschutz drove in a run, and Waters, McGill and Lombardo each scored once.

Stars fall to Heritage

MONROEVILLE - South Adams rallied to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning, but fell behind again in the bottom Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to the Heritage Patriots.

The Starfires trailed 4-0 after the first two innings, but scored once in the fourth, twice in the fifth and once in the sixth to pull even. But Heritage scored again in the bottom of the sixth for the final margin.

Andrew Caffee took the loss, surrendering five runs - four earned - on seven hits. He struck out five and walked one.

Caffee paced the offense, finishing with two doubles and two RBIs. Brent Habegger had a single, a run and an RBI.[[In-content Ad]]
