Baughn leads Jay over Anderson

Local roundup

ANDERSON — Morgan Nadaline ran away with medalist honors. But the Patriots were more consistent as a team.
The Jay County High School girls golf team posted three rounds of 50 or better Monday as it opened the dual-match portion of its schedule with a 197-249 victory over the Anderson Indians at Grandview Golf Course.
Baughn, a sophomore who also led the Patriots at the season-opening Monroe Central Invitational, picked up pars on the par-5 first hole, par-4 third and par-4 fifth. She was 2-over-par through five holes, and also played even on the par-4 eighth on the way to a career-best 43.
Nadaline posted a 36 to lead Anderson, but the Indians’ No. 3 and 4 scorers shot 66 and 70 respectively.
Katlin Petro came up with pars on the first hole and the par-4 fourth en route to a 47 for JCHS, and Whitney Gray added a 50. Alysia Fennig rounded out the team score with a 57, and Abby Saxman shot 68.

Starfires ranked ninth
INDIANAPOLIS — The loss of a large group of seniors didn’t scare off poll voters.
Despite losing 19 players to graduation, the South Adams High School football team earned the No. 9 spot in the Class A football poll released Monday by The Associated Press.
The Starfires earned 70 poll points to finish 14 behind No. 8 Indianapolis Lutheran and 18 ahead of 10th-ranked South Newton.
Defending state champion Lafayette Central Catholic received all but two of the first place votes to earn the No. 1 ranking.
South Adams went 8-1 during the 2011 regular season and was ranked fourth in the final AP poll. It defeated Monroe Central and Union City in the sectional tournament before falling 41-40 in overtime to Sheridan in the championship game.

SA boys soccer falls
BERNE — South Adams’ boys soccer team played even with the visiting New Haven Bulldogs for 30 minutes Monday, but was not able to break through on offense as it lost its season opener 2-0.
New Haven (1-0) broke a scoreless tie on a goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Starfires (0-1) had several opportunities to even the score with just five minutes remaining in the game, but failed to connect as a couple of shots ricocheted off the post. The Bulldogs then came up with a breakaway goal for the final margin.
L.J. Moser came up with 10 saves for SAHS in the defeat. Dustin Dellinger and Marco Vasquez each had two shots on goal.[[In-content Ad]]
