It was the Squaws’ season opener. But they looked in mid-season form.
The Bellmont Squaws invaded Jay County Thursday and rolled to a 5-0 victory over the Patriot girls tennis team, losing just nine total games.
The closest matches for the Patriots (0-2) came at the No. 2s, where they won three games in each. Carissa Wilkins dropped the No. 2 singles match to 6-2, 6-1 to Sarah Werling, and Cindy Muhlenkamp and Tiffani Bickel lost 6-0, 6-3 to Quinci Huffine and Abbie Dean at No. 2 doubles.
In other singles matches Megan Adams lost 6-1, 6-1 to April Erxleben at No. 3 singles, and Angie Stults lost 6-1, 6-0 to Ashley Huffine at No. 1 singles. Bellmont’s Megan Martin and Molly Martin blanked Jessica Muhlenkamp and Megan Knittle 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.

WINCHESTER — If Winchester thought its baseball meeting with the Starfires was bad, it surely didn’t enjoy softball Thursday night.
South Adams’ baseball team clobbered the Golden Falcons 15-1 Tuesday. The Starfire softball team nearly doubled that Thursday with a 27-2, five-inning destruction of Winchester.
Amber Melick led the onslaught for South Adams (1-0), which scored 10 times in the first inning, six in the second, seven in the third and four in the fifth. She finished 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, three runs and five RBIs.
Ashton Morgan and Lindsay Batt each scored four times, and Kayla Coblentz, Lacy Rhoades and Maranda Potts had three runs apiece. Coblentz, Rhoades and Renee Neuenschwander each had two hits.
Melick also got the pitching win, allowing two runs on three hits in four innings while striking out eight.
Errors hurt Jay softball
MUNCIE — Miscues in the first inning cost the Patriots their season opener.
Jay County’s softball team committed two of its four errors in the opening frame, leading to a pair of unearned runs in a 3-2 loss to the Delta Eagles Thursday.
The Patriots (0-1) jumped on top as Saffron Redwine and Trisha Champ scored in the first inning, but gave up the advantage in the bottom. Delta (2-0) scored the only other run of the contest in the fifth inning as it improved to 2-0.
Champ finished with a single, a stolen base and an RBI, and Morgan Locke had an RBI single. Redwine and Amber Champ accounted for the other two Jay County hits.
Shae Keller took the defeat despite a solid effort as two of the three runs against her were unearned. She gave up five hits while striking out two batters in six innings.

NEW HAVEN — Lukas Baumgartner was amazing again, but New Haven was able to top him.
Baumgartner smacked two more home runs for the South Adams baseball team as it took a 5-1 lead after three innings. But the New Haven Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning and three times in the sixth to take a 6-5 victory.
Will Grandlinard suffered the defeat in relief of Mike Farris. He allowed four runs on three hits in two innings of work.
Baumgartner was 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs and three RBIs in the Starfires’ opener against Winchester Tuesday. He stayed hot against New Haven, with two runs and four RBIs with his pair of homers. His three long balls thus far are as many as any South Adams player hit in all of 2005.
Brent Habegger added a pair of hits and a run.[[In-content Ad]]
