Bellmont hands JC netters opening loss

DECATUR - The Patriots held off the start of their season for two days after Tuesday's match against Blackford was canceled because of the weather. Getting on the courts Thursday night, they could not hold off Bellmont.

The host Squaws swept the singles matches and defeated the Jay County High School girls tennis team 4-1.

Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman dropped the first game of their match at No. 2 doubles against Brittany Sanders and Madeline Abert. But they won the next six to take the first set on the way to the Patriots' lone win, 6-1, 6-4.

Megan Huntsman and Briann Saxman led the No. 1 doubles match 5-2 in the first set, but lost six games in a row as they took a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Nicole Votaw and Jamie Basham.

In singles action, Kayla Martin fell 6-2, 6-2 to Jessica Basham at No. 1, Mariah Clark lost 6-2, 6-2 against Allison Gutierrez at No. 3 and Hannah McAbee dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Cori Geyer at No. 2.

Jay County won the junior varsity match 6-3 with 4-0, 4-1 victories coming from Megan McGraw and the teams of Danielle Chenoweth and Lissa Sims; and Chelsie Kimmel and Alicia Degler. Other winners from the JV squad were Alyssa Rigby and the team's of Katie Link and Ashley Caupp; and Rachel Ray and Melinda Penrod.

Jay JV outscores Raiders

SHENANDOAH - Jay County's junior varsity baseball team gave up six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but rallied with five in the top of the seventh for a 16-13 victory over the Shenandoah Raiders.

The Patriots (1-1) scored five times in the first inning and led all the way until Shenandoah's big sixth. After reclaiming the lead, they handed the ball to Ty Huntsman, who struck out two in a scoreless seventh to earn the win.

Anthony Robbins and Chance Fuller powered the offense, each finishing with a single, three runs and two RBIs. Andre Duke drove in three runs, and Skyler Petty had a pair of hits.

Bruggemans win tennis

A pair of brothers earned top spots at the first half of the Junior Olympic Skills Competition Saturday at Jay Community Center.

Mitchell Bruggeman won the 10-11-year-old division in the tennis competition while his brother Michael was first in the 12-13-year-old division.

In basketball, Madison McCormick took first place among the 12-13-year-old girls. In the boys competition winners were Joshua Alfont (8-9-year-olds), Mario Rodriguez (10-11) and Isaac Alfont (12-13).

Local competitions in soccer and track will be May 2. The winners in each event advance to the regional competition in Indianapolis.[[In-content Ad]]
