Bellmont knocks off the Stars

DECATUR — The South Adams High School boys tennis team dropped a 3-1 decision Wednesday to the host Bellmont Braves.
Mark Muselman earned the only victory for the Starfires, who fell to 8-5 on the season with the loss to their county rival. He defeated Evan Selking 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
The Starfires lost both doubles matches, with Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz falling 6-1, 6-0 to Matt Stidam and Garrett McCord at No. 1 and J.D. Tarr and Jonathan Steffen dropping a 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 decision to Austin Mann and David Baker at No. 2.
Alex Huber fell 6-2, 6-0 to Payton Selking in the No. 1 singles match, and the No. 2 singles match was stopped because of rain.
South Adams lost the junior varsity match, 3-0.
Eagles crush W-D
DUNKIRK — Justin Crouch and Phillip Newsome each scored three times Tuesday to lead the West Jay Middle School seventh and eighth grade football teams to wins of 42-6 and 24-6 respectively over the visiting Wes-Del Warriors.
Crouch scored on runs of 1, 25 and 50 yards for the seventh grade Eagles (1-1-1), and also hit Logan Bantz with a 55-yard TD pass. Bantz added a 60-yard scoring run, and Tyler Jester made three tackles.
Newsome reached the end zone for the eighth graders (2-1) on runs of 1, 5 and 24 yards. He and Daniel Meranda each finished with five tackles.
Minnich leads EJ
Emi Minnich led an East Jay Middle School sweep Tuesday as the girls cross country team defeated visiting Blackford 15-48. The boys team added a 20-40 victory.
Minnich won the girls race in 14 minutes, 3 seconds, finishing eight seconds ahead of runner-up Megan Wellman. Kellie Fortkamp was third in 15:14, Erica Kunkler finished fourth in 15:16 and Jamie Valentine took fifth in 15:17.
Michael Denney set the pace for the Chief boys in second place with a time of 14:11. Tim Hein was third in 14:23 ahead of Mark Hein (fourth – 14:25), Matthew Cox (fifth – 14:53) and Kaimen Sanders (seventh – 15:09).[[In-content Ad]]
