Bellmont tops Patriot tankers (01/09/04)

The Jay County swim teams were both close Thursday, but both suffered losses to Bellmont.

The boys team picked up five victories, but could not get the win it needed in the final event and lost a 92-88 decision. The girls team won just two races, but had a good night overall in a 99-86 defeat.

Matt Peterson was the lone Patriots to pick up a pair of wins on the evening.

Peterson was first in diving with a score of 179. He also edged Skyles Fullenkamp by less than one second in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:09.13.

Daniel Fisher had the biggest win of the evening for the Patriots, dominating the 100-yard breaststroke by seven seconds in 1:12.18. Derick Lee added a victory in a time of 1:13.74 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Fisher and Lee also teamed with Joseph Vormohr and Adam Miller to take first in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:56.69.

Josh Hawn and Scott Walker both had outstanding nights as they each scored a pair of personal-best times.

Every member of the girls team scored at least one personal-best time, but the Patriots could manage just three victories.

Sophomore Lindsey Vesperry had an excellent night, scoring a personal-best time of 2:17.99 to win the 200-yard freestyle. She also teamed with Linsy Wilson, Vanessa Wilkins and Rachel McKee to take the 400-yard freestyle relay in a season-best time of 4:24.21.

Sarah Miller added the only other victory of the night as she edged ever closer to the school diving record with 250.85 points. Ada Bebi followed her in second with a personal-best 121.45.

Jay County’s next meet is Tuesday at Hagerstown at 5:30 p.m.

EJ boys win pair

The East Jay boys basketball teams pounded Montpelier for a couple of victories Thursday. Both teams dominated as the eighth grade team scored a 50-22 win and the seventh grade team won 41-21.

Mark Alberson paced the eighth graders (7-2) with 11 points. Austin May and Heath Rigby each had eight points, and Aaron Daniels scored seven points.

Adam Garringer scored 10 points for the seventh grade team (8-1) to lead a list of 12 Chiefs who made it into the scorebook. Lance Franklin had six points, and Billy Wellman, Dexter Shreve and Isaac Poole each added four.

Chiefs stay perfect

A great defensive effort and a fourth-quarter rally gave the East Jay eighth grade girls basketball team a 33-29 win over Delta Thursday. The seventh grade team dropped by a 33-28 score.

The eighth grade team avenged last season’s loss to Delta, taking a 9-4 fourth-quarter advantage to win after trailing by one heading into the final period. The Chiefs are now 7-0.

Abby Loy paced East Jay with 11 points, and Dana Horn had eight points. Shelby Rines had six rebounds, and Casandra Huelskamp added six.

Kaelee Keller had 13 points to lead the seventh grade team. Mackenzie Loy scored five points.

Bloomfield, Shanks split

Bloomfield and General Shanks elementary schools split their games Thursday, with Shanks winning the B-team game 17-13 and Bloomfield taking the A-team game 35-25.

Joe Wallischeck led the General Shanks B-team with eight points, and Tyler Smith had four. Colton Bartlett scored six points for Bloomfield.

The Bloomfield A-team was led by Eric Homan’s 18 points. Brad Horn scored 13 points in the victory.

Ben Vance put in 12 points for the Shanks A-team.[[In-content Ad]]
