BHS netters knock off Stars (09/18/2008)

DECATUR - The Starfires pulled off one comeback victory, but could not find a second.

Losing first sets at four out of five positions, the South Adams High School boys tennis team fell 3-2 Wednesday to the host Bellmont Braves.

Chase Ingle was the lone Starfire to win in the first set, using a tiebreaker to do so. He knocked off Austin Bergdall at No. 1 singles 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.

Daniel Dynes and Jacob Smith played a tight first set with Matt Stidam and Kodee McIntosh at No. 2 doubles before rallying. They dominated the rest of the match for a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 victory.

However, comeback tries for Alex Huber at No. 3 singles and the team of Kyle Schmidt and Landyn Waugh at No. 1 singles fell short as both suffered 6-4, 6-4 defeats. Kegan Sprunger lost 6-1, 6-3 to Mike Stidam at No. 2 singles.

South Adams and Bellmont tied 2-2 in junior varsity action. Wins for the Starfires came from Reid Zurcher, Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz.

EJ runners dominate

Two of the three East Jay Middle School cross country teams swept the top three positions Wednesday in their wins over Hartford City.

The Chief girls posted a 17-39 victory while the sixth and seventh grade boys won 17-40. The EJMS eighth grade boys finished at 27 points while Hartford City did not have enough runners for a team score.

Amber Huelskamp, Abigail Johnson and Alex Loy filled the top three for East Jay in the girls race, with Huelskamp winning in 14-minutes, 10 seconds. Johnson was second in 14:48, followed by Loy (15:13), Julie Valentine (fifth - 15:34) and Patricia Hein (sixth - 15:42).

Zane Shreve won the boys sixth and seventh grade boys race in 12:49 with Jalen Ryder (13:01) second and Austin Muhlenkamp (13:49) in third. Bryan Schwieterman paced fifth in 15:06, and Austin Butcher was one second behind him in sixth.

Dylan Cope took the top spot in the eighth grade boys race at 12:52. Joining him were Chaz Carrol (fifth - 14:30), Brennen Krieg (sixth - 14:33), Nick Leuthold (seventh - 14:39) and Jacob Schlosser (eighth - 15:27).

Starfire golfers fall

GENEVA - The South Adams High School girls golf team posted its second-best score of 2008, but still dropped its regular-season finale Tuesday186-196 to the New Haven Bulldogs.

The score was three strokes off its best round of the season, but 14 strokes better than any other effort.

Tricia Crider parred each of the first four holes at Wabash Valley Golf Club and then bogeyed the fifth. She added a fifth par on the 85-yard, par-3 ninth to lead the Starfires with a 44.

Abbey Smith of New Haven took medalist honors with a 39.

Alyssa Neuenschwander parred two of the final three holes after bogeying each of the first five to shoot 46. Kara Lehman had one par and five bogeys for a 50, and Jansen Yoder and Grace Dobler each had one par in rounds of 56 and 66 respectively.

Kristen Lehman shot 57 for the SAHS junior varsity team, which finished at 264. New Haven did not have enough golfers for a full JV team.

WJ 8th now 2-0

GASTON - West Jay Middle School's eighth grade football team rolled to a 56-6 win Tuesday over the Wes-Del Warriors. The seventh graders lost 14-8.

Tyler Back led the Eagle eighth graders (2-0) by going 4-of-8 passing for 84 yards and TDs to Dustin Tighe and Dylan Harris, and scoring on a 5-yard run. Blake Crouch totaled six carries for 111 yards and three TDs, and Lucas Wiemer ran twice for 71 yards and a TD while recording nine tackles.

Billy Kimble scored the lone TD for the seventh grade team (0-2) on a 9-yard run and also added the two-point conversion as he finished with 19 rushes for 91 yards. Sean Winget ran three times for 31 yards and also led the defense with seven tackles.
