Project could top $1 million
By By Mike Snyder-
BERNE — A renovation project at South Adams High School that could top $1 million took another step forward Tuesday night.
The South Adams School Board agreed to open the project up for bidding, and appointed school superintendent Connie Bailey and board member Tony Mellenkamp to a committee to open those bids on Tuesday, May 10, at 2 p.m. The architectural firm working for the school corporation on the project will also be in attendance
The board will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, May 17, at 6 p.m., to hear a report and recommendation from Bailey and Mellenkamp.
The project, which includes renovations of the Stardome, gym lobby, classrooms, media area, music area and restrooms, has an estimated base cost of $893,360, according to the Indianapolis architectural firm of Lamson and Condon. Additional renovations to the gym, locker rooms, classrooms and music area are to be included in an alternate bid with an estimated cost of $225,497. Both estimates include a 10 percent contingency fee.
The breakdown on the cost estimates in the base bid are: Gym, $252,294; physical education locker room, $136,127; classroom, $124,256; varsity locker room, $99,211; music area, $91,400; restrooms, $63,347; lobby, $24,164; and media area, $21,326.
The alternate bid would include an additional $121,853 in gym work; $44,772 in the varsity locker rooms; $31,472 in classroom work; and $6,900 in the music classrooms.
Also Tuesday, members of the board approved switching South Adams Elementary School to an automated lunch money collection system.
Elementary principal Jeff Rich told the board that the system, which will be paid for by the school’s parent teacher organization, will reduce record-keeping for school staff.
Lunch money will be brought to school and deposited into an account. Students will be issued bar-coded lunch tickets that will be read by a scanner prior to receiving a lunch.
In other business, the SA board:
•Adopted the calendar for the 2006-07 school year. The calendar, which has few changes from this and previous years, is almost identical to the calendars for the Adams Central and North Adams school districts.
•Adopted textbooks for the 2005-06 school year, based on the recommendations of a textbook committee chaired by Scott Litwiller, principal of South Adams Middle School.
•Granted permission to a Berne community organization to plant four trees along Ind. 218 in front of the elementary school.
•Agreed to place surplus school desks and computers in a public sale on Thursday, April 28. The location of the sale will be determined and announced at a later date.
•Approved additional appropriations of $46,000 in maintenance/building supplies; and $50,000 in property liability insurance.[[In-content Ad]]
