Big fifth lifts Jay (05/17/05)

FORT WAYNE — Jay County’s baseball team found some offense in the fifth inning and parlayed it into an 8-4 victory over the Fort Wayne South Side Arches Monday.
The game was tied after each team scored twice in the third inning, but the Patriots posted four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. They scored once in the sixth and seventh innings, and South Side posted two runs in the seventh for the final margin.
Casey Waters and Josh Shatto each had a hit and two RBIs for Jay County, and Rhett Retter had two hits and a run. Andy Hughes and Cory Locke each had one hit and one run.
Josh Atkinson picked up the win, allowing four runs — two earned — on eight hits. He struck out four and walked one as he went the distance.
Wes-Del tops softball
PORTLAND — The Jay County softball team rallied to tie the game twice, but still lost 5-3 in eight innings to the Wes-Del Warriors Monday night.
Wes-Del took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but the Patriots scored once in the third and fifth to pull even. The teams traded runs in the final two innings, but the Warriors scored twice in the eighth to earn the win.
Brittany Logue took the defeat as Jay County dropped to 7-14. She gave up five runs — three earned — on six hits.
She walked a pair and struck out seven.
Saffron Redwine finished 3-for-4 with a run, a stolen base and an RBI. Amber Champ had a pair of RBIs, and Chelsea DeBoy notched a couple of hits.
JV baseball defeats Raiders
PORTLAND — Four runs each in the third and fourth innings gave the Jay County junior varsity baseball team a 10-8 victory over the Wapahani Raiders Monday.
The Patriots (12-5) used the pair of big innings to take a 10-3 lead. Wapahani rallied by scoring five runs in the seventh, but still came up short.
Tom McCowan, Tony McCowan, Kaleb Carpenter and Aaron Bogenschutz each had two hits in the victory.
