DECATUR — The Patriots couldn’t afford to have a second-rate offensive effort against the third-rated team in the state. But that’s just what they got too often as they lost their fourth straight game Tuesday.

Jay County’s boys basketball team made an inspired run in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t come back all the way in a 62-51 loss to the Class 3A No. 3 Bellmont Braves.

Junior Trent Bailey started sizzling late as he scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter. He hit four of his five 3-pointers in what Bellmont coach Shaun Busick called perhaps the best individual performance in a single quarter he had ever seen.

Still, it was not enough to overcome two earlier scoring droughts which resulted in a 20-point deficit.

“We’re just shooting the ball so poorly,” said Jay County coach Craig Teagle, whose team finished at 38 percent from the field. “But we can’t blame anyone but ourselves.”

Teagle said the Patriots have shot themselves in the foot at times by heaving up ill-advised shots. He also said they are not attacking the post the way they should be, which would open up the outside and result in more trips to the free throw line.

Jay County (5-5) saw its scoring problems come in two key stretches which allowed the Braves to take control.

After holding a 4-2 lead midway through the first period, the Patriots went more than six minutes without scoring. Bellmont took advantage of five first-quarter turnovers with a 13-0 run.

Still Jay County closed to within 28-23 on an Andy Pinkerton 3-pointer early in the second half. But again they went dry from the field as the Braves exploded for a 15-3 run and eventually led 52-32.

Bailey and company got the visiting fans going by cutting the lead to 10 points with a ridiculous two-minute spurt, but Bellmont (9-1) hit enough free throws down the stretch to thwart the comeback.

“I was really pleased with that because we had not been shooting (free throws) very well,” said Busick as the Braves finished 18-of-24 from the line (75 percent) and hit 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. “But my thing right now is hats off to Trent Bailey and the Jay County Patriots for a great fourth quarter.

“It was typical Bellmont and Jay County fashion, nothing was easy. This was a war.”

Bailey’s fourth-quarter flurry couldn’t trump big games from the 6-foot-6 duo of Adam Arnold and Aaron Richie of the Braves.

Arnold paced Bellmont with 21 points, while also grabbing twice as many rebounds as anyone else in the game with 14. Richie racked up 20 points and grabbed seven boards.

“I think Arnold and Richie showed why I think they’re going to be Indiana All-Stars,” said Busick, whose team’s only loss this year came against Class 4A No. 4 Columbia City. “I was really pleased with those two.”

“Even when we were in position to stop them they scored over us,” agreed Teagle. “It makes a huge difference when you compete against that level of skill and talent.

“Richie added the 3-pointer, and that makes him a lot harder to defend.”

With Arnold, Richie and 6-foot-5 Brian Schultz patrolling the court the Patriots got very few second-chance opportunities. They were outrebounded 38-21 in the contest as Dustin Overton grabbed a team-high six boards.

Overton was also the lone player to join Bailey in double figures as he scored nine of his 13 points in the first half. Heath Williams finished with six assists and four rebounds.

Jay County will try to end its losing streak when it hosts the Winchester Golden Falcons Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Junior varsity

After dropping three straight games by two points or fewer, the Jay County junior varsity team pulled out a close win by topping Bellmont 49-45 Tuesday.

The Patriots jumped out to a 16-8 lead at the end of the first period. Bellmont clawed back into the game in the second, but Jay County held on thanks in large part to Scott “Scooter” Bruggeman’s free throw shooting down the stretch.

Bruggeman hit 6-of-8 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished 8-of-11 from the line on the way to a game-high 14 points.

Zac Green sealed the game with a pair of four shots with seven seconds left. He came up with a steal on Bellmont’s final trip down the floor to end it.

Tyler Dunnington joined Bruggeman in double figures with 12 points.

Jon Retter scored nine points, Green had eight and Randy Evans added six.

Freshmen

Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team picked up a 29-27 victory over Bellmont Tuesday. The Patriots led by four heading into the final period and fought off the Braves in the closing seconds.

Rhett Retter put in a game-high 12 points for Jay County. Luke McClung had seven points, and Jon Wenger and Casey Waters each added five.

Joe Hammond scored eight points for Bellmont, and Ryan Lehrman and Ian Sanders each had six.[[In-content Ad]]
