A pair of touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half broke open the game for the East Jay eighth grade team Thursday as it rolled over Winchester Driver 26-8.

The seventh grade squad gave up a pair of touchdowns in the final four minutes of the game in a 12-0 defeat.

The eighth graders trailed 8-6 after the first period, but took the lead on a 1-yard run by Nick Stephen with 5:16 left in the first half. Just 2:10 later Ben Vance added a 42-yard touchdown run for a 20-8 lead en route to the win.

Stephen also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Vance added a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth.

Vance powered the Chiefs to victory as he racked up 168 yards of total offense. He ran 12 times for 104 yards, and caught three of Whitey Langenkamp’s four pass completions for 64 yards.

Langenkamp totaled 101 yards through the air. Tyler Freyburger posted a team-best eight tackles.

In the seventh grade game Driver broke a scoreless tie with a 50-yard touchdown pass with just 3:36 remaining in the game. It scored again with 1:13 left for the final margin.

Ike Bruggeman carried five times for 17 yards in the defensive struggle, and Brandon Haffner picked up 16 yards on the ground. Stetson Petro finished with six tackles, including two sacks, and Bruggeman and Brad Eldridge each had five tackles.

Wendel leads Fort eighth

FORT RECOVERY — Nate Wendel came up big for Fort Recovery’s eighth grade team as it defeated the Marion Local Flyers 8-6 Thursday. The Indians lost the seventh grade game to Marion Local, 14-6.

The Indians trailed 6-0 in the eighth grade game until Wendel scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter. He also took the two-point conversion run across the goal line for the winning score.

Adam Roher had the lone TD for the seventh graders, also on an 8-yard, third-quarter run.

Seven finish first

DUNKIRK — The West Jay Optimist Club hosted the Indiana North District Tri-Star football and soccer competitions recently with seven local residents earning first-place awards.

Local competitors took first place awards in football in the boys and girls divisions for 10-, 11- and 13-year-olds.

Champions in the 13-year old group were Michael Daniels and Julie Knapke, in the 11-year-old group were Skyler Prescott and Janelle Schwieterman and in the 10-year-old group were Alex Dunn and Sammi Compton. Justine Wallischeck added a title in the 9-year-old girls division.

Five of those champions also took first place in the soccer competitions. They were Daniels, Dunn, Schwieterman, Compton and Wallischeck.[[In-content Ad]]
