Taking Note
The Hoosier Heartland Chapter of the American Red Cross held a blood drive Tuesday at Jay Community Center with 24 people donating.
Donors were Nyoka J. Smith, Kenneth Newell, Peggy Robinette, Nila J. Newton, Danny Imel, Nancy Hobson, Jack Rouch, Ana Minnich, Donald Morehous, Kevin Keller, Eric Butcher, David Haines, Bonnie Abbott, Rose Howell, Duane Monroe, Ron Fields, Phillip Cowan, Ronald Laux, Marie Bruggeman, Tonya Upp, Jeriann Garringer, Christina Daniels, Matthew Theurer and James R. Theurer.
Volunteers were Barbara Bruner, Jean Rines and Betsi Skiver.
Library events
Registration for the summer reading program at Jay County Public Library will begin Monday, June 2, for infants through teen-agers. "Catch the Reading Bug" will be for infants through fifth grade. "Metamorphosis @ your library" will be for teens in sixth through 12th grade. Registration will continue until June 14 and reading will take place until July 12.
- A story time will be Friday, June 6 at 1:30 p.m. for children of all ages.
- Programs will be held each Monday at 11 a.m. during June and the first two weeks of July.
- Family Fun will be at 9:30 a.m. on the 12 and 28 of June and July 10; Friday Story Times will be at 1:30 p.m. and Buggy Crafts will be Saturday, June 21 from noon until 2 p.m.
- Teen programs will be on Tuesday, June 10 and 24 and July 8 at 7 p.m. for sixth through 12 grade.
- A "Create a Bug" program will be held Monday, June 9, at 11 a.m. and creations may be entered in the "Create a Bug" contest. The deadline to enter is June 28 and complete rules and entry forms are available at the library.

Foundation scholarships
The Portland Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for six different scholarships for Jay County residents.
The Janet B. Arnold Memorial Scholarship is available to a Jay County High School graduate who is a full time college level junior or senior majoring in education and will be worth at least $475.
The Marseal T. DeWeerd, Edith T. Horn and Virgie M. Brady Memorial Scholarship is available for Jay County residents who are juniors or seniors in college, preferably from Penn township. The scholarship will be renewable for up to four semesters at $200 per semester.
The Dr. Ara C. and Gay B. Badders Medical Scholarship is for students seeking a degree in a medical field and is worth $2,000 per semester for up to six semesters.
The Alwyn Carder Scholarship is for students pursuing a degree in architecture, history or education and is worth $750 per semester for up to four semesters.
The Altrusa Club of Portland Scholarship is for women to continue their education or for female GED graduates and is worth $250.
The John Jay Center for Learning Scholarship is for students attending John Jay on a full or part time basis. Several scholarships will be available for $500 each.
