Taking note
The American Red Cross blood drive drew 128 donors last week. The drive was held at Asbury United Methodist Church in Portland Friday.

BOOK SIGNING
Jay County native Alan K. Garinger will autograph copies of his new preteen novel, Jeremiah Stokely, Archaeologist on Saturday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Danner’s Books and Coffeeshop, 2902 W. White River Blvd. in Muncie.
The book is the third in the Jeremiah Stokely series and features the 12-year-old hero in the fictional town of East Newport discovering an ancient Native American site.
Garinger and the illustrator of the book, Ronald E. Groves, are both Muncie residents.
RETIRED TEACHERS
The Jay County Retired Teachers met on April 19, at the Jay County Historical Museum in Portland. The lunch was served by Kay Locker and her helpers and the tables were decorated with articles from the museum.
Prayer and devotions were given by Bob Freemyer. The guest speaker was Julia Schwomeyer. Acknowledgements were read for scholarship and memorial donations in 2003. Chris Loy thanked the members for their 7,351 volunteer hours in 2003. The IRTA representative assembly will meet on May 19 with Bob Freemyer and Glen Priest attending. Mary Knote was the door prize winner.
Kay Locker, Jane Spencer and Janice Stucky presented information on the Jay County Historical Museum. Membership dues are $15 per person and $25 for families. They have monthly meetings and publish a monthly newsletter.
4-H FUN
The Jay County 4-H Annual Share-the-Fun Contest was held Saturday, April 17.
Winners in the Group Act were the Jefferson Patriots performing “Monster Mash.” Performers were Josh Atkinson, Mikey Armstrong, Keith, Kyle and Denny Gardner, Megan and Will Taylor, Sarah Ninde, Lindsey Weesner, Blake Davis, Brady Phelps, Jessica Quinn and Tryce Van Skyock.
Also winning in Curtain Act/Non-Musical was the Jefferson Patriots performing “Oh Brother!” Performers were Josh Atkinson, Mikey Armstrong, and Keith and Denny Gardner.
Winning the Curtain Act/Musical was the Wabash Cannonballs with a violin solo performed by Laura Fennig.
Winners will perform in Rushville on Thursday, May 6, at Rushville High School. The public is welcome.
