Boles leads Jay to title
RICHMOND — The Patriots have six wins on the season.
Larissa Boles has been the winning pitcher in each game.
The Jay County High School junior struck out 18 batters and didn’t allow an earned run as the Patriots beat Hagerstown and Richmond on Saturday to win the Red Devil Classic.
After striking out 10 and giving up two hits in a 7-0 win against the Hagerstown Tigers, she struck out eight in a 4-2 win over host Richmond for the championship.
In the title game, Jay County and Richmond both scored two runs in the first inning, but the Patriots got one run each in the fifth and seventh innings to earn the title.
Against the Tigers, Jay County grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top half of the third. It scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings before adding three more in the seventh.
Boles helped out her own cause at the plate, smacking a double and a home run with three RBIs en route to her earning most outstanding player honors.
Courtney Finnerty had three hits, including two doubles, with Katie Aker and Gabby Hart also picking up a pair of base knocks. Chelsea Tighe and Catherine Dunn both added doubles.
Jay splits with Centerville
Jason Houston drove in Toby McCallister in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Jay County baseball team a 3-2 victory Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against the visiting Centerville Bulldogs.
The Patriots (1-3) weren’t so lucky in the second game.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Jay County had a prime opportunity to walk off once more, loading the bases with one out but weren’t able to get a run home to earn the sweep.
Houston finished with five hits on the day. Chaz Carroll pitched in relief to get the win in game one.
Kyle Selvey had four hits for the Patriots, with Keenan James and McCallister adding a pair of hits.[[In-content Ad]]
