A rural Portland teenager is on her way to California to see the stars and learn more about how she can help her community.

Torie Bradburn, 17, a senior at Jay County High School, will join a group of outstanding students at UCLA July 18-27 to participate in the People to People Leadership Summit there.

Bradburn, who was nominated for her scholastic merit, community involvement and leadership roles, will participate in the program’s law summit.

She has demonstrated her qualifications for the program through her active roles in student council, National Honor Society and her participation on the JCHS swim team. She is also an honor roll student and has enjoyed completing business law classes in order to further explore her interest in the law, Bradburn said.

While in California, she will attend workshops about the SAT and ACT exams, listen to lectures about public speaking and learn how she can become a leader in community service projects. She will also receive advice from college admissions officers about the college application process.

On the other hand, it is not all strictly business. She will have breaks to tour the UCLA campus, visit Disneyland and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“I’m looking forward to learning more about law, so that I can pursue that as a future career,” Bradburn said. “This will also give me a chance to be away from home and see what it feels like.”

However, this is not the first time that she has been away from home. Bradburn attended Girls State at Indiana State University in Terre Haute June 19-25, after being nominated by the American Legion Post in Portland.

The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program provides high school girls with the opportunity to better understand U.S. government processes through mock trials and learning the process of state elections. Bradburn noted that the experience was interesting and allowed her to learn more about her interests.

“Government definitely isn’t something that I want to pursue,” she said after returning from her Girls State experience.

After she graduates from JCHS next year, Bradburn plans on attending college and pursuing a career in law.

She is the daughter of Wayne and Vickie Bradburn of rural Portland.[[In-content Ad]]
