Braves clobber Jay County, 9-0 (09/18/03)

The Bellmont Braves were more than ready to play Wednesday night, crushing the Jay County girls soccer team in Decatur 9-0.

The Patriots (3-4-1) couldn’t do much to stop a a very physical Bellmont squad. The Braves finished with 34 shots on goal, compared to just four shots from Jay County.

Bellmont built a 4-0 lead in the first half as Sara Garringer managed to save nine of its 13 shots. Renae Laux took over at goalie in the second half and saved 16 of the 21 shots she faced.

Krista Ross, Jessica Heitkamp, Jamie Bruggeman and Sarah Dirksen each took one shot for the Patriots in the defeat.

Jay County will play Huntington North at home Saturday at 11 a.m. in what should be the deciding game for the Olympic Athletic Conference title.

Chief runners win big

The East Jay cross country teams came away with three big victories Wednesday. The seventh grade boys team topped Hartford City 24-31, while the eighth grade boys won 15-40 and the girls team was victorious by a 17-38 score.

The Chiefs took first place in each of the three races, with Edwin Clott winning the eighth grade boys competition in 12:05. Amanda Johnson captured the girls race with a time of 12:33, and Steven Kelly was first in the seventh grade boys race in 12:27.

Clott’s win led a sweep of the top six finishing slots for East Jay. Cody Sutton was second (12:18), followed by Leo Muhlenkamp in third (12:46). Justin Moser took fourth (12:49), Justin Hall was fifth (12:51) and Joshua Ludy placed sixth (13:20).

Johnson led a one-two-three finish for the Chiefs in her race, with Amber Detro in second in 12:47 and Kylie Wellman third in 13:03. Cassandra Laux placed fifth for East Jay in 15:00 and Brianne Wellman was sixth one second behind.

Following Kelly in the seventh grade boys race was David Darby in third place (13:25). Joey Franks was fourth (13:46), and Daniel Muhlenkamp in sixth (15:02).

5K run/walk

Randolph County YMCA will sponsor the 2003 Mardi Gras 5K Run/Walk next month.

The 5K will be Saturday, Oct. 4 and will begin at the Main Street Christian Church in Winchester. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the race to start at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $10, and the first 50 runners registered are guaranteed a T-shirt. Awards will also be given to the top finishers in each division.

Meeting scheduled

The Jay County girls basketball booster club will meet Monday in the Jay County High School gym at 7 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
