Braves overpower Jay Co. (05/30/03)

Local Roundup

The Jay County baseball team has a very impressive 21-5 record to end the regular season and is ranked ninth in the state with the sectional tournament beginning next week. Unfortunately, three of those losses were against sectional opponents.

The Patriots lost for the third time against a possible sectional foe Thursday, dropping an 11-5 decision to the Bellmont Braves. They had also lost to first-round opponent Norwell 10-0, and possible second-round opponent Blackford 4-1.

Jay County led the Braves 3-0 in the middle of the second inning before falling apart. It allowed seven runs in the bottom of the frame and never led again.

The Patriots scored twice in the fifth to pull within two runs, but Bellmont answered with four runs of its own for the final margin.

Trent Bailey took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in 22/3 innings. Kyle Champ and Chad Keen finished the game in relief.

Heath Williams paced the Jay County offense with a 3-for-3 effort. He had an RBI and two stolen bases.

Bailey had a single and two RBIs, and Chance Retter singled and drove in one run.

The Patriots open sectional play against Norwell at Blackford Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Summer swimmers roll

The Jay County Summer Swim team had no problems in its season opener Thursday, recording a 710-226 victory over Centerville.
