Dr. Arthur Williamson received the Achievement in Education Award by The Portland Breakfast Optimist Club for 2005-06.

After serving in the United States Navy for three years as a communication officer during the Korean War, Williamson came to Jay County in 1954 to teach in Bryant.

Before that he graduated from Pembroke Academy and received a bachelor's degree from Keene State College, both of New Hampshire.

After leaving Bryant, he taught at the Lancaster Central School in Bluffton and then became principal at Jackson Township Elementary School. During this time, he was earning his master's degree in education from Ball State University.

He earned his doctorate in education from the University of Illinois in 1961, after completing his doctoral thesis on school finance.

He worked in the central office for the Cincinnati school system for three years before accepting a position as assistant superintendent of schools in Massillon, Ohio, in 1964. He became superintendent in Chardon, Ohio, in 1966 and in 1970 became superintendent of schools in Pearl River, New York.

Retiring as superintendent Emeritus in 1990, he moved back to his home state of New Hampshire.

Williamson married the former Judithan Axe in 1956 and they returned to Jay County in 1999 for family reasons. The couple has two children, Sandra and Brian, who live in Carmel, N.Y. They also have two grandchildren.

Birthday celebration

An 80th birthday party in honor of the Weiler Building will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The cement and steel art deco building was built in 1926 and is located at the southeast corner of Main and Meridian Streets in Portland .

There will be opening ceremonies, birthday cake, tours of the building and historic displays.[[In-content Ad]]
