Broin gets grant to fund plant (03/10/07)

Business roundup

Broin Companies, the nation's largest dry mill ethanol producer, and the US. Department of Energy have agreed to jointly fund the development of a cellulosic ethanol plant. The DOE recently announced a grant that will fund a portion of Broin Companies' $200-million expansion of a conventional corn dry mill facility in Emmetsburg, Iowa, into a bio-refinery that will include production of cellulosic ethanol from corn cobs.

Jeff Broin, CEO of Broin Companies, said the goal is to bring cellulosic ethanol to commercial viability by the end of the decade in order to reduce global warming, revitalize the rural economy and lessen the country's dependency on foreign oil.

The project will convert a conventional corn dry mill facility in Emmetsburg into a commercial scale bio-refinery designed to produce ethanol from corn fiber and corn cobs.

The Emmetsburg plant began operations in March, 2005, as a 50-million gallons per year dry mill facility. Once the expansion is complete, the plant will produce 125 million gallons per year of ethanol from corn and corn cobs.

Boom fuels sales

Farmland prices are soaring across the Midwest amid a surge in demand for corn driven by the ethanol boom, according to the Wall Street Journal.

In the past year, cropland prices have climbed by double-digit percentages in many parts of the Midwest, as growers looking to cash in on $4-a-bushel prices for corn, up from about $2 a year ago, have scrambled to add arable acreage.

The rise in prices is yet more evidence of the extent to which the rise of renewable, corn-derived ethanol is reshaping the Midwestern landscape, according to the Journal.

U.S. ethanol production capacity is expected to rise to 11.6 billion gallons from today's current production capacity of 5.6 billion gallons in the next 18 to 24 months, according to the Renewable Fuels Association, a Washington-based industry group.

The push to grow more corn, in turn, has led some farmers to switch soybean acres to corn, which has put upward price pressure on soybeans, too.
