Brown leads JC over Golden Bears

PARKER CITY - Nathaniel Brown led the Jay County High School baseball team as it got back on track Monday with an 8-1 victory over the host Monroe Central Golden Bears.

Brown racked up three hits in four at bats for the Patriots, who were coming off of a couple of losses Saturday to Northrop. He also scored two runs.

Andre Duke and Alex Dunn added two runs apiece for Jay County, which scored three times in the first inning and twice in the second to build a 5-0 lead. Monroe Central scored its only run in the bottom of the third, and the Patriots put up three more runs in the fifth for the final margin.

Jon Pettus, Willie Mayfield and Chance Fuller followed Brown with two hits and one run apiece.

Eric Homan picked up the victory as he struck out seven batters in seven innings. He gave up just three hits and two walks, and the only run against him was unearned.

Girls track rolls

MUNCIE - Jordan McMillan racked up three victories and Maria Murphy chipped in a pair in the Patriots' 75-48 victory Monday over the Muncie Central Bearcats.

It was a statement win for Jay County (21-2), which finished one-fifth of a point behind champion Central in the 2009 sectional.

McMillan picked up victories in both jumping events, with leaps of 4 feet, 6 inches and 14 feet, 2 inches in the high jump and long jump respectively. She was also first in the 100-meter dash in 12.3 seconds.

Murphy finished the regular season unbeaten in the shot put with her victory at 34 feet, 7 inches. She also took the discus with a toss of 104 feet, 7 inches.

Morgan Link added a victory in the 100 hurdles in 18.58 ahead of teammates Megan Taylor and Kim Braun. Katie Simmons took the 1,600 run in 5 minutes, 45 seconds, and Kari Hemmelgarn, Leah Wellman, Eme Miller and Liz Lennartz teamed for the 4x800 relay win in 10:43.

Mann paces golfers

WARREN - Austin Mann took medalist honors for the first time in his career Tuesday, leading Jay County to a 191-200 victory over the host Southern Wells Raiders.

Mann turned in the only birdie of the day for the Patriots on the 277-yard, par-4 second hole. He also had a par and three bogeys on the way to a 45.

Blake Huffman and Tyler Cassidy shared the top score for Southern Wells at 47.

Drew Houck had two pars as he followed Mann with a 46, and Evan Ryder added two pars for a 49.

Mitchel Rigby completed the team score with a 51, and Jacob Heitkamp shot 53.

In the junior varsity match, Justen Keller finished with a 47 as the Patriots won 199-233.[[In-content Ad]]
