TIPTON - Sometimes you just have one of those nights. Unfortunately for the Patriots, it came in the sectional semifinal.
The Blackford Bruins scored six times in the opening two innings Tuesday and rolled to an 11-0 victory over Jay County at the tournament hosted by Tipton.
Defending champion Blackford jumped on the Patriots in a hurry, scoring twice in the opening inning. It added four more runs in the second and never allowed JCHS to get anything going.
"Tonight of all nights we didn't hit the ball," said Jay County coach Jack Wood. "We made some mistakes."
Of the Bruins' 11 runs, four were unearned thanks to five errors, although they racked up 14 hits. Amber Edmundson took the loss, giving up three runs in 11/3 innings, and Shae Keller gave up eight runs - four earned - in 52/3 innings of relief.
The Patriots managed just three hits, one each by Kaelee Keller, Pazia Speed and Lauren Edmundson.
The defeat ended the best Jay County season in recent memory at 16-10. The team won 13 games a year ago, which marked the first double-digit win season since 2001.
"We had a great year," said Wood. "It was a positive. Hats off to the seniors. They were very dedicated student athletes."[[In-content Ad]]
