Brunswick picks up win

COLDWATER, Ohio - Holly Brunswick picked a victory for the Fort Recovery High School girls track team in the opening day of the Mercer County Knights of Columbus Meet Thursday.

Both the Indian boys and girls stand fourth out of sixth teams at the meet, which continues today.

Brunswick's victory came in the long jump, where she won by just over three inches at 16 feet, ¾ inches.

She earned the No. 1 seed in the 100-meter hurdles finals with a qualifying time of 17.17 seconds.

Abby May was the top qualifier in the 300 hurdles in 48.56 seconds, and picked up the No. 2 seed in the 100 dash in 13.62.

The FRHS boys team came away with a couple of third-place finishes in the first day of the meet. Mark Mattraw turned in a toss of 43 feet, 7 ¾ inches in the shot put, and Aaron Vagedes cleared the high jump bar at 6 feet even.

In the junior high portion of the meet, Alex Shelton qualified first in both the 100 dash and 200 dash for the Fort Recovery girls.

David Trobridge earned the No. 2 seed in the 100 dash and 400 dash for the boys.

Kent Retz finished as the high jump runner-up at 5 feet, 2 inches, and Isaac Keller was third in the shot put with a toss of 31 feet, ½ inches.

SA softball blanked

BERNE - The South Adams High School softball team fell 1-0 in eight innings Thursday to the visiting Southern Wells Raiders.

The game was scoreless until the extra frame, when Southern Wells scored thanks in part to an error by the Starfires. Katrina Hawkins took the loss despite striking out 11 batters while allowing five hits.

Tori Smith went 2-for-4 with a stolen base for South Adams. Other hits came from Brianna Nevil, Karen Bollenbacher and Kysha Cox.

FR baseball falls again

FORT RECOVERY - Fort Recovery's baseball team dropped its 15th straight game Thursday, managing just one hit in a 9-0 loss to the Fort Loramie Redskins.

A.J. Backs gave up eight runs - four earned - on seven hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings to take the defeat. Jared Kahlig allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Ryan Gaerke had the only hit for the Indians, and Nate Keller and Backs each drew a walk. In its last five games, FRHS has been no-hit twice and garnered just one hit twice.[[In-content Ad]]
