Building permits top $2 million
Jay County building permits for May were for almost $2 million in new construction— including nearly $1.5 million for three separate confined feeding operations.
A total of 28 permits were issued in May totaling $1,857,800. Permits were issued to:

Downturns in the automotive industry continue to make the business climate challenging for Portland-based FCC (Indiana).
Eric Garringer, senior manager, human resources for the company, said this week that reduced orders for Honda clutch components have reduced hours for most of the company’s employees.
Garringer said that a recently-announced second shift and expansion of production at Honda’s plant in Greensburg will not be a huge boost for FCC, but “given the difficulties we have had this year so far, we are excited by this bit of good news.”
FCC (Indiana) announced in May it was seeking property tax abatements on a $19 million investment in new equipment. The equipment is expected to create eight new jobs.
Local banks recognized
Two banks have been named Five Star Members of a statewide program on May 24.
Bank of Geneva and First Bank of Berne earned the award at the Indiana Bankers Association in recognition of their commitment to the IBA in the areas of political awareness, life-long learning, issue advocacy, volunteerism and preferred service provider utilization.
Permit withdrawn
A company that had offered up to 70 new jobs has withdrawn a permit application to build a $10 million plant in Randolph County.
Naturally Recycled Proteins withdrew its application for an air quality permit on Tuesday, May 24. The company has also filed an application for Blackford County. NRP officials said they are looking at sites in various locations in Indiana and Ohio, and have filed the permits at about the same time because of time issues.
Pharmacy moved
A local Fort Recovery pharmacy opened for business at a different location after making some renovations.
Kaup Pharmacy opened Tuesday, May 24 on the corner of Ohio 119 and Wayne Street after 30 years of service at its 110 East Butler St. location.
Kaup Pharmacy president Lorri Kaup said they were in need of more room for retail and pharmacy space.
The pharmacy’s old location is still in use for offices and storage. The ground level will be renovated and have several offices.
Acquisition announced
Saint-Gobain Glass India, signed an agreement concerning the acquisition of Sezal Glass Limited’s float glass business in India.
Saint-Gobain will acquire a new float plant located in the district of Bharuch, in Gujarat.
The company has other industrial sites in India, including a manufacturing complex in Chennai automotive glass processing plants in Pune, and a new float under construction in New Delhi.
Survey results shown
Many investors think technology and gold will be the top performing investments in 2011.
A recent survey conducted to 1,019 participants by Opinion Research Corporation on behalf of financial services firm Edward Jones, shows that 36 percent of them believe technology stocks will perform best in 2011. Gold followed close behind with 31 percent of the respondents saying it will have a positive performance.
New product launched
Bell Aquaculture has launched a new fertilizer to help the growth of plants. The product is only available through online purchase.
Bell Aquaculture, located in Redkey, is the nation’s largest yellow perch farm.
Certifications announced
Family Hospice and Palliative Care announced the recent board certifications in Hospice and Palliative medicine of four physicians: Bernie Wiebe, Medical Director for Family Hospice and Palliative Care, Carol Butler, Assistant Medical Director; Edmond Bendaly, Associate Medical Director; and Roger Lemmen, Palliative care director.
Sales up
Chrysler Group’s U.S. sales increased 10 percent in May over the same month in 2010, making for the best May sales since 2008, The Kokomo Tribune reported this week.
Ram pickups have remained as Chrysler’s top seller at more than 20,000 units sold in May. The vehicle alone accounted for about 17.4 percent of all sales in Chrysler’s 25-vehicle fleet.
Sales for the Jeep Grand Cherokee leaped 192 percent to 9,484 sales from 3,246.
