Bulldogs get 1st win against SAHS (12/29/06)

Local roundup

NEW HAVEN - It wasn't exactly the way the Starfires wanted to end 2006.

In their final game before the new year, the South Adams boys basketball team struggled in the second and third quarters. It gave up 40 points during that stretch in a 63-58 loss to the New Haven Bulldogs, who picked up their first win of the year.

New Haven entered the game 0-7 and fell behind 12-6 in the opening period, but rallied back on its home floor. By halftime the Starfires trailed by two points, and their deficit was nine after three quarters. They put up 21 fourth-quarter points, but could not deny the Bulldogs their first victory.

Jordan Steiner scored nine of his 17 points from the foul line for South Adams, which slipped to 4-4 and has lost three of its last four games. Andrew Caffee added 13 points, and Darin Toland scored 10.

South Adams won the junior varsity contest, 52-45.

Tribe freshmen rally

FORT RECOVERY - After scoring just seven points in the middle two quarters, the Fort Recovery freshman girls basketball team re-discovered its offense in the fourth to rally for a 34-31 win over the Coldwater Cavaliers.

Fort Recovery had a 10-4 lead after the opening period, but fell behind by six as it struggled to score over the next two periods. But the Indians matched their point total from the first three quarters in the fourth to improve to 3-2.

Josie Guggenbiller paced Fort Recovery with 13 points. Alyssa Brackman added nine points, and Kelsey Brockman scored four.[[In-content Ad]]
