Burkhalter honored by SA board (4/14/04)
Auditorium at SAHS named after longtime music educator
The auditorium at South Adams High School will be named in memory of the late Dr. Freeman Burkhalter.
South Adams School Board members unanimously approved the move to honor the longtime music educator Tuesday night.
A music teacher and choral director, Dr. Burkhalter worked with both school and church groups in Adams County. He died five years ago.
“I haven’t had one person tell me it’s a bad idea,” said board member Dennis Affolder, who introduced the proposal in March.
“I think it’s a good idea,” said board member Tony Mellencamp.
Affolder will organize a committee and schedule a formal dedication ceremony at a later date.
Board members also were unanimous in approving new student handbooks and a new athletic handbook.
The student handbooks for elementary, middle school and high school had only minor changes, but the athletic handbook has undergone a complete review and revision.
“The coaching staff really did a lot of work on this,” said athletic director Steve Rhoades. Kirk Sorg headed up the committee which drafted the handbook.
Rhoades said the plan is for the handbook to be reviewed every two years.
In other business, the board:
•Approved the tentative schedule of summer school classes to be offered this year.
•Adopted new mathematics textbooks as recommended by a committee of parents and teachers.
•Accepted the retirement resignations of district treasurer Linda McMullen and processing secretary Marcella Sipe.
•Authorized Betty Stuber, Karen Dubach and Connie Shady to attend the Indiana Association of Educational Office Professionals spring conference, Scott Litwiller to attend IndianaNext, and Mitch Stookey, Pam Rough and Mark Cook to attend the Student Transportation Association of Indiana conference.
•Accepted the resignation of teacher Chris Hyman.
•Approved sending a group of auto mechanics and machine trades students to three competition events in Indianapolis in April.[[In-content Ad]]
