An insurance agency in Portland has been named 2005 Agency of the Year.
Portland Insurance Agency, 115 E. Main St., has won the honor for the second year in a row — the only Cooper Club agency to do so.
The award was announced at the annual Cooper Club luncheon, which recognizes Indiana Farmers Mutual top agencies. Portland Insurance Agency has been in business for 65 years and has represented Indiana Farmers Mutual for more than 33 years. The company provides home, auto, commercial and farm insurance.
Portland Insurance was selected for the award based on its growth, profitability and ability to retain policyholders. During the past five years, the agency has had an average 20 percent growth each year.
PERFECT SURVEY
State of the Heart Home Health and Hospice recently received a perfect score on a survey by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
The survey report had no requirements for improvement or recommendations to the agency.
“The surveyor applauded us for the quality of care the agency provides,” executive director Tammy Fox said in a press release. “She said the services we provide our patients were exemplary.”
The accreditation is good for three years. State of the Heart has offices in Portland, Coldwater, Ohio and Greenville, Ohio.
“I am so proud of our staff,” Fox said. “I know our staff puts forth their very best in caring for our patients. They are the ones to be congratulated for this outstanding achievement.”
State of the Heart, formerly known as Hospice of Darke and Mercer County, has been offering service to area communities for 25 years.
The program provides home health services, and cares for patients and families facing a terminal illness.
NEW DEGREES
The John Jay Center for Learning has added new bachelor and associate of science degrees.
The bachelor’s degree is in management and the associate degree is for business. Both degrees can be earned through the JJCL. The bachelor of science in management program begins on Thursday, April 28. The associate degree program started in February.

Community and Family Services, Inc. has hired a part-time coordinator for the Jay County Well Child Clinic.
Curtis Bow was hired for the position. He is a nurse practitioner and Ball State University graduate. He works part-time at the Vormohr Medical Center, is a lecturer at the Indiana University East School of Nursing and is an assistant professor of the LPN program at Ivy Tech State College.
The clinic provides physical exams for children and conducts lead screenings and hemoglobin tests. The Well Child Clinic will be open Tuesday, May 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling (260) 726-9318.

First Bank of Berne has selected a new assistant vice president/marketing director and an assistant vice president/branch manager.
Teresa Flaugher, who works at the bank’s main branch in Berne, was chosen as assistant vice president/marketing director. She began working for the bank in August of 2002, as marketing director. In June 2003, she became an officer at the bank.
She currently serves as secretary of the Berne Rotary Club and membership committee chairman fo the Berne Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. She and her husband Gary live in Wells County and have two sons, Brad and Dustin.
Penny Parish was chosen for the assistant vice president/branch manager position.
She works at the Decatur First Bank of Berne office. She began working for the company in August of 2000. Parish is a graduate of Wright State University and has more than 17 years in banking experience.
Parish is a board member of the Decatur Rotary Club and a member of the Adams, Jay and Wells County Board of Realtors.
She and her husband Jeff live on the Ohio-Indiana state line. They have three children — Nick, Natalie and Alexis.

Old National Bancorp has appointed a new president and a senior vice president to the corporate mortgage division.
Richard Malloy was named president of Old National Mortgage and Shara Mitchell was selected as senior vice president, director of mortgage operations.
Malloy and Mitchell will lead a revamped mortgage division that focuses on new product development and enhanced client service.
“Old National has really listened to what our clients and partners in real estate have said they need and want,” Malloy said in a press release.
“We’re proactively responding with a number of changes so that we can deliver the highest level of client care.”
In his new role, Malloy will lead the division’s 145 mortgage professionals.
Mitchell will manage all aspects of mortgage operations including processing, underwriting, closing, post closing and project management.

Bluffton Regional Medical Center will hold a series of four free classes to educate the community about osteoporosis.
The first class will be on Tuesday from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Wells County Council on Aging, 225 W. Water St., Bluffton. The class also will be offered that day from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Bluffton Regional South Campus dining room, 1026 S. Main St., Bluffton.

Bluffton Regional Medical Center has been named Five Star Community Investor and Five Star Investor by the American Cancer Society.
The awards are given to hospitals that are active in fighting cancer through programs and services of the American Cancer Society. To qualify for the awards, hospitals must participate in at least five areas of the society’s mission. These include advocacy, a breast cancer cervical program, a cancer committee, cancer screenings, tobacco prevention, participation in Relay for Life events, and access to cancer information.
“Bluffton Regional Medical Center is a wonderful leader in the fight against cancer,” ACS quality of life director Debra Pontecorvo said in a press release. “By partnering with the American Cancer Society, Bluffton Regional is being recognized for improving the quality of life for the cancer patients.”
