Business speaker coming to JCPL (01/29/08)

Taking Note

Indiana Wesleyan University LEAP Program will have a information session on Wednesday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Jay County Public Library.

A representative from Indiana Wesleyan will speak on its business classes which meet one night a week in Jay County.

Library programs

Jay County Public Library has announced story times for February for infants and children accompanied by an adult.

They will be Monday, Feb. 4, 11 and 18 at 10 a.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 5, 12 and 19 at 1 p.m. Story times will last for a half hour to 45 minutes and will include four or five books read aloud, followed by a craft.

No registration is necessary.

Family Fun Time will be Thursday, Feb. 7 and 21 at 9:30 a.m. There will be stories, toys, music and conversation shared.

No registration is necessary.

Jay County Coroner Mark Barnett will present a death investigation program on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m.

He will discuss the different aspects of being a coroner and how the coroner's office operates when there is a fatality.

Registration is not necessary.

An After School Special will be Friday, Feb. 8, from 2:45 to 4 p.m. for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

There will be a snack provided, a story shared and a craft or two will be completed.

Stop smoking

A free two-week nicotine replacement therapy starter kit is available to anyone in Jay County who enrolls in a stop smoking program.

Heart contest

The South Adams Scholarship Committee of the South Adams School system is having a "With Heart" contest from Feb. 4 to 8 to raise scholarship money.

Hearts may be purchased at a cost of two for $1. Purchasers will write the name of a South Adams School system employee on each heart.

Eight winners will be drawn at random from the names on the hearts. Eight winners will also be chosen at the elementary and middle schools. The winners will be honored at the boys home basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Oratorical winners

Winners of the Optimist Oratorical Speech Contest were announced at East Elementary.

The winner in the girls' division was Catherine Dunn, a fifth grader and the daughter of Tom and Rita Dunn.

The winner in the boys' division was Scott Heston, the fifth grade son of Greg and Yvonne Heston.

Runners-up were Alexis Myers and Payden Schug, both fifth graders.

First place winner in the girls' division at Westlawn Elementary School was Courtney Rickmeyer, a fourth grader and the daughter of Dennis and Billie Newsome.

First place winner in the boys' division was Jon Blankenship, the fifth grade son of John and Tish Blankenship.

Runners-up were Julia Garringer, a fourth grader and the daughter of Greg and Laura Garringer and Mitch Bennett, a fifth grade student and the son of Tammy and Tab Bennett.

First place winner in the girls' division at Pennville Elementary was Lily Corcoran, the daughter of Tim and Natalie Corcoran.

First place winner in the boys' division was Noah Claycomb, the son of Matt and Tonya Claycomb.

The runners-up were Mariah Schaadt and Will Rowles.

Winning first place in the girls' division at General Shanks Elementary was Lizzy Schoenlein, a third grader and the daughter of Jim and Kristen Schoenlein.

First place winner in the boys' divison was Andrew McShane, a fifth grade student and the son of John and Lisa McShane.

Runners-up were Carli Ostrowski, a fifth grader and the daughter of Phillip and Joni Ostrowski and Brian DeRome, a fourth grader and the son of Brad and Lori DeRome.

Writing workshop

The Art Association of Randolph County will have a creative writing workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Union City Railroad Arts Depot in Union City.

River Lin, a freelance writer from Union City, Ohio, will conduct the workshop. She will provide participants with tips from her experience as well as literary prompts that will promote writing skills and provide word play which could become poetry.

The cost is $5. Participants are to bring paper, a pen or pencil and an open mind.

Registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 8. To make reservations, call the AARC at (765) 964-7227 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. VISA and MasterCard are accepted.

Dean's list

Joshua Stultz has made the dean's list for the fall semester of 2007 at Ball State University.

Alex R. Hunt has been named to the dean's list at Methodist University in Fayetteville, N.C. for the fall semester of 2007.

He is a junior majoring in professional golf management and will receive a bachelor's degree in business management along with his PGA Class A rating upon completion of the program in December of 2009.

Operating classes

The Whitewater Valley Railroad in Connersville will conduct operating classes for brakeman, conductor, fireman, engineer, agent and operator.

Classes will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, at 9 a.m. and continue each Saturday through March 29.

The South Connersville Yard Office is located on Indiana 121 South.
