Caffee keys sixth as South Adams advances (05/30/06)

Local roundup

MONROE — Thanks to some late offense, the South Adams baseball team will play on.

The Starfires trailed 6-4, but scored five times in the bottom of the sixth inning Monday. They defeated the Heritage Patriots 9-6 in the opening round of the Class 2A Adams Central sectional and will play Woodlan today at 5 p.m.

Woodlan advanced to the semifinal round with a 1-0 victory over Bluffton Monday. Also Monday, Adams Central defeated Fort Wayne Harding 6-1 in semifinal action.

Corey LeMaster keyed the big inning for South Adams with a three-run home run. Mike Farris finished 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base, and Jordan Sharp had two runs and two RBIs.

Andrew Caffee got the win in relief of Will Grandlinard, allowing one run on two hits in 12/3 innings.

Jay golfers are 17th

MUNCIE — The Jay County boys golf team finished 17th in a powerful field at the Muncie Invitational Saturday.

The Patriots shot 368, finishing ahead of Anderson Highland, Shenandoah and Muncie Southside at the 20-team event. No. 20 Delta won with a 299 as seven of the participating teams were ranked in the state’s top 20.

Adam Gray and Josh Hall shared the top team score for Jay County at 87. Hall played the first four holes at 1-under par, and Gray had pars on five of the first six.

Ben Gasca parred the opening two holes and notched a 93. James Brosher finished with a 101, and Justen Moser shot 102.

Cardinals open at 3-1

GENEVA — It was a good start to the season for the Geneva Cardinals as they went 3-1 on their opening weekend.

Geneva started with a pair of wins — 6-5 and 12-2 — over the Great Lakes Captains Saturday. They split with the No. 6 Indianapolis Dodgers Sunday, winning the opener 1-0 and losing game two 12-11.

Pitchers Dann Hunt and Jared Baker combined to shut out the Dodgers in the victory. Hunt allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings, and Baker tossed two perfect frames to finish the game.

The Cardinals got their only run in the third inning after a one-out walk by Alex Childers. Tony Aldridge and Nate Colclasure each added singles in the inning to bring Childers home.[[In-content Ad]]
