The Jay County Cancer Society announces those who gave in April, May and June.

Giving in April in memory of Betty Ford was Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pogue, Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Mann, Jerri Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Deon Winn, Tom and Pam Rowles and family, Valerie and Gerald Shepherd, Randy and Tamala Mann.

Giving gifts in June were Gamma Alpha Chapter-Psi Iota Xi Sorority and Helen Bailey. Giving in memory of Ted Smith was Moser Engineering. Giving in memory of Joe Pyle was Portland Forge Employees Credit Union. Giving in memory of Kathryn Hudson was Jerry and Sue Shirk, Barry and Elizabeth Hudson.

Giving in memory of Max Ludy Sr. was Mark Wilson, Kent and Gloria Schindler, Tom and Betty Settle, Rick and Linda Lacy, David and Sharon Paluch, G. Schmit, Rhonda Ludy, Mr. and Mrs. Orla, Mr. and Mrs. Kyle Ludy and family, Robert and Rosalie Clamme.

Open house

The Jay County Historical Museum will have an open house on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The featured display will be Buttocks Baskets from the Appalachian area from local residents Jim and Debbie Waechter.

The museum is located at 903 E. Main St. in Portland. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Quilt show winners

The Swiss Stitchers Quilt Guild of Berne announces the winners of its 2005 quilt show that was held at South Adams High School during Swiss Days. The show featured 225 entries.

Winning people’s choice awards were Helen Myers of Monroe, first place for a whole cloth quilt with embroidered flowers; Grace Dubach of Berne won second place for a whole cloth quilt with embroidery; Alice Liechty of Berne won third place for a scrappy flower garden quilt. These winners received a monetary award.

The winners of the challenge blocks were Virginia Nussbaum of Berne, first place for a Celtic design; Lois Fegley of Ohio City, Ohio, second place for a Celtic design; and Virginia Nussbaum, third place for a Sunday best block. These winners received a hardbound quilt pattern quilt.

All winners were chosen by the more than 700 people from 16 states and Canada who attended the show.

Weaving class

The Jay County Public Library will have a Learn to Finger-Weave class on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. The class will be taught by Paula Butcher from the National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture. A belt and/or bookmark will be made by participants.
