Canterbury defeats SAHS spikers in four (09/08/2008)

South Adams high school's volleyball team won its opening game, but fell 20-25, 25-11, 25-16, 25-20 to the Canterbury Cavaliers.

The victory in the first game against Canterbury was just the fourth of the season for the Starfires, who have also won openers against Norwell, Oak Hill and Jay County before dropping those matches. They are 0-11 on the season.

Amber Neuenschwander had 10 digs and three aces. Karen Bollenbacher added five kills and three blocks.

South Adams won the junior varsity match, 13-25, 25-23, 15-7.

Anna tops Fort JV

FORT RECOVERY - The Anna Rockets scored 21 seconds-half points to pull away and hand the Fort Recovery High school junior varsity football team a 43-14 defeat.

All of the Indians' points came in the second quarter thanks to Shane Brunswick. He scored first on a 1-yard run, and then threw a 10-yard TD pass to Ryan Schoen.

Brunswick also ran in for the two-point conversion after Schoen's score. Fort Recovery is now 1-2.

Tribe spikers split

Fort Recovery's freshman volleyball team improved to 5-1 Saturday with a 25-17, 25-19 win over Fort Loramie, but then dropped its second match of the season 25-20, 25-18 to Wapakoneta.

Kayla Kahlig led the Indians to their victory with 10 assists and three digs. Hunter McAbee added nine points and two assists, and Olivia Schwieterman and Rashell Muhlenkamp each scored five points.

Schwieterman racked up 12 points, 12 assists and five digs in the loss to Wapakoneta.

Kahlig had 19 assists and five digs, and Abby Backs and Katelyn Jutte each served five points.

WJMS splits with Falcons

WINCHESTER - The West Jay Middle School eighth grade football team slaughtered Winchester Driver Thursday, 40-0, in its season opener.

The WJMS seventh grade team lost 32-6.

Tyler Back powered the Eagles, tossing a pair of TDs and running in for another. Luke Wiemer racked up 90 rushing yards and scored twice, Dustin Tighe and Vance Guntle each had one TD and Jacob Harter maded five tackles.

Billy Kimble scored a a 20-yard run for the seventh grade team's lone TD. Isaac Nicklay totaled six tackles.[[In-content Ad]]
