The Jay County gymnastics team put up its best score of the season Monday, but still ended up with its first defeat.

The Carroll Chargers turned in an outstanding debut, topping the host Patriots 104.15-97.25. It was the first meet of the season for Carroll, which scored more than two points better than at the Huntington North regional a year ago.

Freshman Nadlie Runyon was the only Jay County athlete to break Carroll's hold on the top three, scoring a pair of third-place finishes. Her top score of the night came on the floor exercise where her 8.6 was good enough for third place just behind the Chargers' Olivia Wagoner (8.65).

Runyon also finished five hundredths of a point behind Wagoner on the balance beam with a third-place 8.55.

She had the top all-around score for JCHS as well at 33.0.

Caitlin Radke won the uneven bars (8.45), floor (9.05) and beam (8.95) for Carroll, and Wagoner was first on the vault (9.4).

Senior Lacey Thornburg turned in the top scores for Jay County in the remaining events with an 8.2 on the vault and a 7.9 on the bars.

Klopp and Habegger led the boys team to a 94-75 victory while Sharp powered the girls team in its 112-58 win.

The wins for Klopp came in back-to-back events as he finished first in the 50-yard freestyle at 23.05 seconds. Next he dominated the 100 butterfly by more than 12 seconds with a winning time of 57.52.

Habegger cruised to victory by nearly eight seconds in the 200 individual medley in 2-minutes, 19.68 seconds. He also posted a time of 1:03.72 to win the 100 backstroke.

Sharp powered the girls team, leading a one-two Starfire finish ahead of Allison Beitler as she reached the wall in 2:10.99 in the 200 freestyle. She also won the 100 butterfly at 1:06.83.

Kyle Affolder had the only other individual win for the boys team while Beitler, Megan Myers, Lauren Rich and Channing Yoder all turned in first-place efforts for the girls.[[In-content Ad]]
