Center gathering set for June

The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture will have its 9th annual Gathering of Great Lakes Nations on June 9 and 10 in Portland.
The gathering will be at the Tri-State Antique Gas Engine Association Grounds on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Michael Jacobs, a Cherokee musician, will perform Saturday at noon and 5 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
Other performers will be the Blue Heron Singers, Stubby Grass Singers and Medicine Woman Singers.
There will also be Native American drums, singers and dancers, Native American foods and vendors, activities for children, a pre-1840 re-enactment camp and artisan demonstrations.
Also Tony Showa, a Navajo, will teach how to make a personal hand drum and drum beater on May 12 at the Women’s Building at Jay County Fairgrounds.

“Dream Big: READ!” will be the theme for the summer reading program at Jay County Public Library. It will begin on Monday, June 4, and continue through Thursday, July 14. Registration forms will be available at the library beginning June 4.
Kindergarten Prep School (KIPS) will be held each Tuesday at the library, beginning June 5 and continuing through Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. until noon. Any child entering kindergarten in the fall is eligible for the free program that teaches academic and social skills. Forms are available at the library.
