Center to gather in June
Taking Note
The 10th annual Gathering of Great Lakes Nations will be held in June at the Tri-State Antique Gas Engine Association grounds in Portland.
The event is sponsored by National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture, Inc., and will be held Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
There will be drums, singers, dancers, food and vendors, a pre 1840 camp, children’s activities and artisan demonstrations.

Scholarships
The Portland Foundation is currently accepting applications for its summer grants. Scholarships are available in the following categories.
The Altrusa Club of Portland Scholarship: For non-traditional Jay County college students.
Janet B. Arnold Memorial Scholarship: For Jay County High School graduates who are entering their junior or senior year of college and majoring in elementary education.
Dr. Ara C. and Gay B. Badder Medical Scholarship: For students majoring in medical arts or education.
Ruth Whipple-Badders Medical Scholarship: For Jay County High School graduates who are entering their junior or senior year of college and majoring in education.
The Alwyn Carder Scholarship: For students who are juniors or seniors in college and pursuing a degree in architecture, history or education. The scholarship is renewable for up to four semesters.
The Marseal T. Deweerd, Edith T. Horn, and Virgie M. Brady Memorial Scholarship: For Jay County residents who are junior or seniors in college, with preference given to residents of Penn Township. The scholarship is renewable for up to four semesters.
East Central Opportunities, Inc. Scholarship: For students attending the John Jay Center for Learning.
John Jay Center for Learning Scholarship: For students attending the John Jay Center for Learning, full or part-time, and in a degree-seeking program.
Charles & Ruth Joos Scholarship: For Jay County High School graduates who are sophomores, juniors or seniors in college.
Dr. Glade A. and Joyce H. McAfee Memorial Scholarship: For Jay County residents who are enrolled in either a doctoral program in optometry or a certified registered nurse anesthetist program.
Robert Quadrozzi Memorial Scholarship: For Jay County residents who are enrolled in higher education classes at the John Jay Center for Learning.
