Center to hold art classes (06/24/08)
Taking Note
The National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture will host traditional cultural arts classes Monday, Aug. 4 through Friday, Aug. 8, at the Women's Building at Jay County Fairgrounds. Classes are available for children and adults.
Classes for adults are $70 per person and scholarships are available by calling Linda Andrews at (765) 474-1045 or at [email protected]. The scholarship deadline is July 23. Children's classes are $15 per day and include lunch.
A welcome meal will be on Sunday at 7 p.m. Registration begins Monday from 8 to 9 a.m.
Cherokee recording artist Michael Jacobs will perform Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Goodtimes Theatre at Bearcreek Farms. For ticket information, call (260) 997-6822 or visit www.bearcreekfarms.com.

Museum open
The Fort Recovery State Museum is located at 1 Fort Site Street in Fort Recovery. The museum features information about the two Indian battles fought at the site, artifacts from the battles and one of Ohio's largest collections of prehistoric Indian artifacts.
The museum is open daily from noon until 5 p.m. in June, July and August and weekends from noon until 5 p.m. May through September.

FFA competes
The Fort Recovery FFA Chapter recently participated in the Sub District Public Speaking contest at St. Henry High School.
Freshman Jessica Heitkamp, Link and Stacy Will earned gold ratings in the FFA Creed Speaking contest.
Lindsey Fortkamp placed first in the Prepared Speech contest and Chris Gehret placed third.
Kelsey Brockman placed second in the Beginning Prepared Speech contest.
Aaron Sutter participated in Extemporaneous Speech.
Also FFA members participated in the District Public Speaking contest held at Miami East High School.
Kelsey Brockman placed third for her Beginning Prepared Speech and Lindsey Fortkamp placed fourth for her Prepared Speech.
Poker run
Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY), an organization to benefit foster children, is organizing what they hope is the Nation's Largest Poker Run on July 12.
Motorcyclists will begin by drawing a card toward a five card poker hand and continue on a route of 40 to 80 miles where they will draw three more cards and draw the final card after returning to the beginning site.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at Benson Motorcycles, 6410 W. McGalliard Road in Muncie.
The cost is $20 for the rider and $15 for the passenger.
