Business start-up

Ergo Desktop is an adjustable computer desktop — dubbed the Kangaroo — that allows users to work at their computers while sitting or standing.
Now housed in the Galleria in Celina, the company is adding onto its facility and will be increasing its workforce to 16.
The Daily Standard (Celina) reported that about 30 Kangaroos are being shipped each day.
New chief nurse
Bluffton Regional Medical Center has named Julie Thompson, R.N., as its new chief nursing officer. She has been on the nursing staff at Bluffton since 1984, serving most recently as director of acute care services.
A native of Portland, she’s a 1980 graduate of Jay County High School and a 1984 graduate of Ball State University. She’s the daughter of Merle and the late Wanda Lou Stewart.
Now a resident of Bluffton, she and her husband Doug have three children. She’s active at First Church of Christ and with the Girl Scouts.
Adding jobs
The Sallie Mae call center in Muncie is expected to add 200 new jobs by the middle of next year. The student loan company now employs 700. It is planning a $5 million investment in technology and a building expansion.
Down a bit
Allegheny Technologies, parent company of Portland Forge, reported a drop in net income in the second quarter compared to the same period last year.
The company reported net income of $56.4 million on sales of $1.36, compared to net income of $64 million on sales of $1.35 billion in the same quarter of 2011.
Mercer lowest
Neighboring Mercer County posted the lowest unemployment rate in Ohio in June. The June jobless rate was 4.6 percent.
This marks the eighth consecutive month that Mercer County has had the best employment picture in Ohio. The Ohio unemployment rate for June was 7.4 percent.
Strong quarter
Old National Bancorp this week reported second quarter earnings of $27.2 million, a 60 percent jump from $17 million in the same quarter last year.
Based in Evansville, Old National has a branch in Portland.
“Organic loan growth, sound expense management, better than peer credit quality, and an expanding net interest margin are the result of a continued focus on our strategic imperatives as well as our ability to be a successful acquirer,” said chief executive office Bob Jones in a prepared statement.
