Chamber casino night set (09/20/2008)
Business roundup
The casino life is coming to Bearcreek Farms this month.
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its Third Annual Casino Night starting at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 27 at Bearcreek Farms.
With dinner, gambling, showgirls and Elvis, the event will cost $25 per person. For more information about the event, call the chamber at (260) 726-1799.
Annexation
The City of Montpelier is planning to annex two parcels of land into the city limits at the request of a local grain company.
Central States Enterprises requested two parcels of land, which will be the site of a $170 million expansion for their company, be annexed into the city limits. The city has moved forward and barring a major protest from locals, the land should become part of the city by the end of the year.
Networking luncheon
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly networking luncheon at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 30, in conference room A of Jay County Hospital.
The program will be on the 2008 United Way campaign.
Egg operation
A giant chicken egg-laying operation should begin operations in about a year if no snags are hit.
The plans for the 168,000-bird facility were submitted to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for approval. The planning facility would be built at Ind. 218 and county road 600 East in Adams County.
The company planning the project, Berne Hi-Way Hatchery, will have a hearing with the Adams County Planning Commission at 8 p.m., Oct. 16 in the Adams County Service Complex in Decatur.
Crop estimates down
The USDA cut crop projections for Indiana after a lack of rain has withered crops across the state.
Statewide the USDA predicts the weather strain will cause a decrease of 10.7 million bushels for corn and 16.6 million bushels of soybeans. In east-central Indiana, corn yields were down 6 bushels from 164 bushels per acre to 158.
After a very wet early summer, the area hasn't seen much rain, causing crops to begin to brown out.
Power rates
Indiana Michigan Power is considering raising its utility rates since the first time since 1993.
The power company wants to boost their rates 21 percent to help cover the costs of maintaining the utilities. The group will have to go through the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in order to garner approval for the rates hike.
