Chamber, JCDC plan forums (05/31/08)
Business roundup
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce and Jay County Development Corporation are in the process of creating three business forums.
This fall, there will be one meeting of each new group.
The CEO Roundtable event will be held at 4 p.m. on Sept. 18. On Oct. 16, at 4 p.m., the Human Resource Connection will meet, and on Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. the Elected Officials Forum will meet. All of the meetings will be held at the Community Resource Center, Portland.
The events were planned to serve as networking opportunities for business, industry, organizations and government officials.
New business
A new video gaming center has opened in Portland.
Gamers Hub, located on North Meridian Street, two doors north of the Ritz Theatre, opened this week. The business will have Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Wii gaming systems. There also will be arcade games.
The business will be open seven days a week, from noon to midnight, said one of the owners, Dale Howell. Admission is $10 a day, or $20 for a VIP membership.
There also will be a concession stand at the business, and video game tournaments, Howell said.
On June 6 and 7, actor A.J. Trauth, who has appeared on several television shows, will be at the business. Among his credits are "You Wish" and "Even Stevens" on the Disney Channel, "Ghost Whisperer", "CSI", "House", "Reba" and "7th Heaven". He also is the lead singer of the band "Mavin."
"Our goal is to kind of help get kids off the street," Howell said.
Howell, a former Portland resident, currently resides in Atlanta. Nate Lingo, Portland, also is operating the business.
Manager of the year
The manager and loan officer of a Dunkirk bank has been named Banking Center Manager of the Year.
Renee Moore of First Financial Bank recently was named at the company's annual awards program in West Chester, Ohio. Her husband, Mike, earned the same honor for the bank's location in Union City.
The Dunkirk bank also was named the Banking Center of the Year for the north central Indiana market.
New hours
The Jay County Landfill has established new hours.
The landfill is open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is closed on Saturdays.
Golf outing set
The Jay County Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual golf outing in September.
The Randy O. Poole Memorial Golf Outing will be held Sept. 6. at the Portland Golf Club.
Registration begins at noon, and the tournament starts at 12:30 p.m. Hole sponsorship is $250 or $175.

Wal-Mart helps out
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is lending a hand to victims of the recent earthquake in China.
The company has pledged about $3 million to help with reconstruction efforts in the country. Company officials also recently announced they are considering setting up a charitable foundation to provide long-term disaster relief.
Menards to open
A new Menards Mega Store will be opening in Celina, Ohio.
The new store located at 1920 Havemann Road will open for business on June 10. Menards boasts 240 facilities throughout the Midwest.
The grand opening celebration will feature special savings, give-aways, in-store demonstrations and celebrity appearances.
Furniture factory closes
Berne Furniture Co., a fine furniture manufacturer in Adams County, closed recently, leaving locals at a loss.
The factory has been a prominent part of Berne since 1925 until closing May 19. The company employed around 130.[[In-content Ad]]
