Champ again notches low score for Patriot golf team (08/04/04)

The Jay County girls golf team’s youth movement continued to show improvement Tuesday.

For the second straight meet, freshman Trisha Champ led the team as it scored a 443 to finish seventh at the Monroe Central Invitational. Champ was joined in the team scoring by two sophomores and senior Shonda Sutton as the team posted three personal-best scores.

Yorktown was first with a 339, Shenandoah placed a distant second at 394, and Muncie Central was third with a 400. Yorktown’s Kelly Short was the medalist with a 73.

Champ’s team-leading score of 98 for Jay County was six strokes better than her first high school action at the Richmond Invitational Monday. Sutton notched a personal-best 113, and sophomore Katie Kohler matched that number for her career-best score.

Sophomore Miranda Denney rounded out the team scoring with a 119, and sophomore Ashley Bunch shot 140.

The Patriots will golf at home for the first time this year Thursday against Tri at Portland Country Club at 10 a.m.

Fort tickets

Tickets for the 2004 Fort Recovery fall sports season will go on sale Monday, Aug. 16.

Super tickets, which include admission to football, volleyball, and boys and girls basketball games, will be $125 for adults and $75 for students. Football season tickets will be $25 for adults and $15 for students.

Johnston places 26th

Tyler Johnston, a Jay County senior, played well as he finished 26th at the Pepsi Boys State Junior Championship at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington Tuesday.

Johnston shot a 76 in the first round of competition, and drop a stroke for a 75 in the second round. His 151 tied him for 26th place with seven other golfers.

Evansville’s Kyle Reddington took medalist honors with a 140.

Geneva pulls

The Geneva Volunteer Fire Department will host tractor and truck pulls Saturday, Aug. 7.

Tractor pulls will begin at 8 a.m., and truck pulls will start at 6 p.m. at the Limberlost pulling track behind Pizza King in Geneva. The cost of admission is $7.

Pair of aces

There were a pair of holes in one at Wabash Valley Golf Course in Geneva Tuesday.

Denny Ord of Greenville, Ohio knocked in an ace with a nine wood on the 115-yard 12th hole, and Bluffton’s Kameron Meyer hit a hole-in-one with a nine iron on the 135-yard ninth.

Pee wee football

Registration for the 2004 Jay County Pee Wee Football season will be held on two Saturdays in Aug.

There will be sessions from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 14 and Aug. 21 at Hines-Inman Memorial Stadium in Portland Memorial Park. Jay County students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades are eligible to play.
